Topics covered include: online-market research, consumer behavior, conversion metrics, and segmentation considerations; ecommerce, search and display advertising, audiences, search engine marketing, email, mobile, video, social networks, and the Internet of Things. Matrix Factorization Techniques for Recommender Systems

On the truck dispatching problem

As both CPUs and GPUs become employed in a wide range of applications, it has been acknowledged that both of these Processing Units (PUs) have their unique features and strengths and hence, CPU-GPU collaboration is inevitable to achieve high-performance computing. This has motivated a significant amount of research on heterogeneous computing techniques, along with the design of CPU-GPU fused chips and petascale heterogeneous supercomputers. In this article, we survey Heterogeneous Computing Techniques (HCTs) such as workload partitioning that enable utilizing both CPUs and GPUs to improve performance and/or energy efficiency. We review heterogeneous computing approaches at runtime, algorithm, programming, compiler, and application levels. Further, we review both discrete and fused CPU-GPU systems and discuss benchmark suites designed for evaluating Heterogeneous Computing Systems (HCSs). We believe that this article will provide insights into the workings and scope of applications of HCTs to researchers and motivate them to further harness the computational powers of CPUs and GPUs to achieve the goal of exascale performance.

A Survey of CPU-GPU Heterogeneous Computing Techniques

An original clustering approach for recommender systems.The approach is based on item metadata informations (item genres).Items are clustered in several clusters.Weighting strategies are used to combine clusters evaluations.MAE is improved between 0.3 and 1.8% and RMSE between 4.7 and 9.8%. Recommender systems are effective to identify items that could interest clients on e-commerce web sites or predict evaluations that people could give to items such as movies. In this context, clustering can be used to improve predictions or to reduce computational time. In this paper, we present a clustering approach based on item metadata informations. Evaluations are clustered according to item genre. As items can have several genres, evaluations can be placed in several clusters. Each cluster provides its own rating prediction and weighting strategies are then used to combine these results in one evaluation. Coupled with an existing collaborative filtering recommender system and applied on Yahoo! and MovieLens datasets, our method improves the MAE between 0.3 and 1.8%, and the RMSE between 4.7 and 9.8%.

Weighting strategies for a recommender system using item clustering based on genres

We propose a medical image segmentation approach based on the Active Shape Model theory. We apply this method for cervical vertebra detection. The main advantage of this approach is the application of a statistical model created after a training stage. Thus, the knowledge and interaction of the domain expert intervene in this approach. Our application allows the use of two different models, that is, a global one (with several vertebrae) and a local one (with a single vertebra). Two modes of segmentation are also proposed: manual and semiautomatic. For the manual mode, only two points are selected by the user on a given image. The first point needs to be close to the lower anterior corner of the last vertebra and the second near the upper anterior corner of the first vertebra. These two points are required to initialize the segmentation process. We propose to use the Harris corner detector combined with three successive filters to carry out the semiautomatic process. The results obtained on a large set of X-ray images are very promising.

A framework of vertebra segmentation using the active shape model-based approach

Data mining continues to play an important role in medicine; specifically, for the development of diagnosis aid models used in expert and intelligent systems. Although we can find abundant research on this topic, clinicians remain reluctant to use decision support tools. Social pressure explains partly this lukewarm position, but concerns about reliability and credibility are also put forward. To address this reticence, we emphasize the importance of the collaboration between both data miners and clinicians. This survey lays the foundation for such an interaction, by focusing on the specifics of diagnosis aid, and the related data modeling goals. On this regard, we propose an overview on the requirements expected by the clinicians, who are both the experts and the final users. Indeed, we believe that the interaction with clinicians should take place from the very first steps of the process and throughout the development of the predictive models, thus not only at the final validation stage. Actually, against a current research approach quite blindly driven by data, we advocate the need for a new expert-aware approach. This survey paper provides guidelines to contribute to the design of daily helpful diagnosis aid systems.

Specifics of medical data mining for diagnosis aid: A survey

The segmentation of cervical vertebra in X-Ray radiographs can give valuable information for the study of the vertebral mobility. One particular characteristic of the X-Ray images is that they present very low grey level variation and makes the segmentation difficult to perform. In this paper, we propose a segmentation procedure based on the Active Shape Model to deal with this issue. However, this application is seriously hampered by its considerable computation time. We present how vertebra extraction can efficiently be performed in exploiting the vast processing power of the Graphics Processing Units (GPU). We propose a CUDA-based GPU implementation of the most intensive processing steps enabling to boost performance. Experimentations have been conducted using a set of high resolution X-Ray medical images, showing a global speedup ranging from 15 to 21, by comparison with the CPU implementation.

A classification approach to face the heterogeneity of multisite medical databases.A promising learning scheme to develop consistent aid in diagnosis models.A case study on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Recently, the culture of sharing medical data has emerged impressively, reducing significantly the barrier to the development of medical research accordingly. As open-access large datasets result from this significant initiative, data mining techniques can be considered for the development of interpretable expert systems to help in diagnosis. However, the collaborative effort of information gathering yields heterogeneous databases because of technical and geographical factors. Indeed, on the one hand, the harmonization of protocols for data collection is still missing. On the other hand, cultural and social factors impact locally both the epidemiology and etiology of a given disease. Ignoring these factors could weaken the credibility of studies based on multi-site data. Thereby, our work tackles the development of computer-aided diagnosis systems relying on heterogeneous data. For such a purpose, we propose a multi-level approach (inspired by multi-level statistical modeling) based on decision trees (in the sense of machine learning). This framework is applied on the public ADHD-200 collection for the study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
