The detection of product defects is essential in quality control in manufacturing. This study surveys stateoftheart deep-learning methods in defect detection. First, we classify the defects of products, such as electronic components, pipes, welded parts, and textile materials, into categories. Second, recent mainstream techniques and deep-learning methods for defects are reviewed with their characteristics, strengths, and shortcomings described. Third, we summarize and analyze the application of ultrasonic testing, filtering, deep learning, machine vision, and other technologies used for defect detection, by focusing on three aspects, namely method and experimental results. To further understand the difficulties in the field of defect detection, we investigate the functions and characteristics of existing equipment used for defect detection. The core ideas and codes of studies related to high precision, high positioning, rapid detection, small object, complex background, occluded object detection and object association, are summarized. Lastly, we outline the current achievements and limitations of the existing methods, along with the current research challenges, to assist the research community on defect detection in setting a further agenda for future studies.

Acoustic matching methods utilizing active and passive materials have been discussed. Special materials such as nanocomposites, metamaterials, and metasurfaces as emerging materials have been presented. Emphasis is placed throughout the article to differentiate the difference between electric and acoustic impedance matching and the relation between the two. Comparison of various techniques is made with the discussion on capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages. Acoustic impedance matching for specific and uncommon applications has also been covered.

A Review of Acoustic Impedance Matching Techniques for Piezoelectric Sensors and Transducers.

The photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal measures the local variations of blood volume in tissues, reflecting the peripheral pulse modulated by cardiac activity, respiration, and other physiological effects. Therefore, PPG can be used to extract the vital cardiorespiratory signals like heart rate (HR), and respiratory rate (RR) and this will reduce the number of sensors connected to the patient's body for recording these vital signs. In this paper, we propose an algorithm based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition with principal component analysis (EEMD-PCA) as a novel approach to estimate HR and RR simultaneously from PPG signal. To examine the performance of the proposed algorithm, we used 310 (from 35 subjects) and 632 (from 42 subjects) epochs of simultaneously recorded electrocardiogram, PPG, and respiratory signal extracted from MIMIC (Physionet ATM data bank) and Capnobase database, respectively. Results of EEMD-PCA-based extraction of HR and RR from PPG signal showed that the median RMS error (1st and 3rd quartiles) obtained in MIMIC data set for RR was 0.89 (0, 1.78) breaths/min, for HR was 0.57 (0.30, 0.71) beats/min and in Capnobase data set it was 2.77 (0.50, 5.9) breaths/min and 0.69 (0.54, 1.10) beats/min for RR and HR, respectively. These results illustrated that the proposed EEMD-PCA approach is more accurate in estimating HR and RR than other existing methods. Efficient and reliable extraction of HR and RR from the pulse oximeter's PPG signal will help patients for monitoring HR and RR with low cost and less discomfort.

Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition With Principal Component Analysis: A Novel Approach for Extracting Respiratory Rate and Heart Rate From Photoplethysmographic Signal

To maximize utilization of our forest resources, detailed knowledge of wood property variation and the impacts this has on end-product performance is required at multiple scales (within and among trees, regionally). As many wood properties are difficult and time-consuming to measure our knowledge regarding their variation is often inadequate as is our understanding of their responses to genetic and silvicultural manipulation. The emergence of many non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methodologies offers the potential to greatly enhance our understanding of the forest resource; however, it is critical to recognize that any technique has its limitations and it is important to select the appropriate technique for a given application. In this review, we will discuss the following technologies for assessing wood properties both in the field: acoustics, Pilodyn, Resistograph and Rigidimeter and the lab: computer tomography (CT) scanning, DiscBot, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, radial sample acoustics and SilviScan. We will discuss these techniques, explore their utilization, and list applications that best suit each methodology. As an end goal, NDE technologies will help researchers worldwide characterize wood properties, develop accurate models for prediction, and utilize field equipment that can validate the predictions. The continued advancement of NDE technologies will also allow researchers to better understand the impact on wood properties on product performance.

Non-Destructive Evaluation Techniques and What They Tell Us about Wood Property Variation

Review of the use of air-coupled ultrasonic technologies for nondestructive testing of wood and wood products

Stress-wave-based techniques have been proven to be an accurate nondestructive test means for determining the quality of wood based materials and they been widely used for this purpose. However, the results are usually inconsistent, partially due to the significant difficulties in processing the nonlinear, non-stationary stress wave signals which are often corrupted by noise. In this paper, an ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) based approach with the aim of signal denoising was proposed and applied to stress wave signals. The method defined the time interval between two adjacent zero-crossings within the intrinsic mode function (IMF) as the instantaneous half period (IHP) and used it as a criterion to detect and classify the noise oscillations. The waveform between the two adjacent zero-crossings was retained when the IHP was larger than the predefined threshold, whereas the waveforms with smaller IHP were set to zero. Finally the estimated signal was obtained by reconstructing the processed IMFs. The details of threshold choosing rules were also discussed in the paper. Additive Gaussian white noise was embedded into real stress wave signals to test the proposed method. Butterworth low pass filter, EEMD-based low pass filter and EEMD-based thresholding filter were used to compare filtering performance. Mean square error between clean and filtered stress waves was used as filtering performance indexes. The results demonstrated the excellent efficiency of the proposed method.

Stress Wave Signal Denoising Using Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and an Instantaneous Half Period Model

Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) has been recently used to recover a signal from observed noisy data. Typically this is performed by partial reconstruction or thresholding operation. In this paper we describe an efficient noise reduction method. EEMD is used to decompose a signal into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The time intervals between two adjacent zero-crossings within the IMF, called instantaneous half period (IHP), are used as a criterion to detect and classify the noise oscillations. The undesirable waveforms with a larger IHP are set to zero. Furthermore, the optimum threshold in this approach can be derived from the signal itself using the consecutive mean square error (CMSE). The method is fully data driven, and it requires no prior knowledge of the target signals. This method can be verified with the simulative program by using Matlab. The denoising results are proper. In comparison with other EEMD based methods, it is concluded that the means adopted in this paper is suitable to preprocess the stress wave signals in the wood nondestructive testing.
