Eugenia uniflora linnaeus, known as Brazilian cherry, is widely distributed in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. E. uniflora L. extracts contain phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes, and sesquiterpenes. The antimicrobial action of essential oils has been attributed to their compositions of bioactive compounds, such as sesquiterpenes. In this paper, the fruit extract of E. uniflora was used to synthesize silver and gold nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis, transmission electron microscopy, elemental analysis, FTIR, and Zeta potential measurement. The silver and gold nanoparticles prepared with fruit extracts presented sizes of ~32 nm and 11 nm (diameter), respectively, and Zeta potentials of −22 mV and −14 mV. The antimicrobial tests were performed with Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans. The growth inhibition of EuAgNPs prepared with and without photoreduction showed the important functional groups in the antimicrobial activity.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a ubiquitous bacterium with various hosts that causes mass mortality in farm-raised fish species and significant economic losses. The current antibiotic treatment is ineffective in controlling this bacterium infection in aquaculture species. Therefore, an evaluation of potential phytobiotics is needed to find an alternative antimicrobial agent to reduce the over-reliance on antibiotics in aquaculture and safeguard public and environmental health. Furthermore, the rise in antibiotic resistance cases among pathogenic bacteria indicates an urgent need for new fish and shellfish health management solutions. In this context, phytobiotics applications in aquaculture can be defined as any medicinal plant-based antimicrobial agent used in fish and shellfish health management. This review will focus on the impacts of Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) due to A. hydrophila in aquaculture, the potential of phytobiotics in enhancing the tolerance of aquaculture species against MAS and the combination of phytobiotics with other antimicrobial and therapeutic agents against MAS.

Role of phytobiotics in relieving the impacts of Aeromonas hydrophila infection on aquatic animals: A mini-review

Wound infections play a vital role in the development of chronic conditions resulting in delayed wound healing. The present work describes the fabrication of high efficacious electrospun nanofibers using an eugenol microemulsion (EuME) reinforced on a Chitosan/PVA (biopolymeric) matrix to fabricate bead-free and smooth eugenol microemulsion impregnated nanofibers (EuME-NFs). This was done by optimizing the concentration to 9%, electric voltage to 25 kV, needle tip to collector distance to 15 cm and flow rate adjusted to 0.5 ml/hr. Scanning electron micrographs revealed homogenous fabrication of well-aligned electrospun nanofibers oriented with an analogous fiber diameter. The physical interaction and hydrogen bonding between the fabricated nanofibers were determined using FTIR. The crystalline structure of the microemulsion reinforced nanofibers was evaluated using XRD. The prepared EuME-NFs were compared with cinnamon microemulsion loaded nanofibers (CinME-NFs) and clove microemulsion loaded nanofibers (CloME-NFs). The EuME-NFs revealed greater antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram-negative). The hemocompatibility studies showed that EuME exhibited a minimum percentage of cell mortality (lymphocytes) (6.31%) and a minimum percentage of hemolysis (erythrocytes) (19.44%). The EuME-NFs with greater antibacterial efficacy and hemocompatibility profiles provide an appropriate microenvironment for wound dressing applications.
