Recent progress on doped ZnO nanostructures for visible-light photocatalysis

The efficient handling of wastewater pollutants is a must, since they are continuously defiling limited fresh water resources, seriously affecting the terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial flora and fauna. Our vision is to undertake an exhaustive examination of current research trends with a focus on nanomaterials (NMs) to considerably improve the performance of classical wastewater treatment technologies, e.g. adsorption, catalysis, separation, and disinfection. Additionally, NM-based sensor technologies are considered, since they have been significantly used for monitoring water contaminants. We also suggest future directions to inform investigators of potentially disruptive NM technologies that have to be investigated in more detail. The fate and environmental transformations of NMs, which need to be addressed before large-scale implementation of NMs for water purification, are also highlighted.

ZnO Photocatalyst Revisited: Effective Photocatalytic Degradation of Emerging Contaminants Using S-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles under Visible Light Radiation

In the past few decades, many novel non-metal doped ZnO materials have developed hasty interest due to their adaptable properties such as low recombination rate and high activity under the solar light exposure. In this article, we compiled recent research advances in non-metal (S, N, C) doped ZnO, emphasizing on the related mechanism of catalysis and the effect of non-metals on structural, morphological, optical and photocatalytic characteristics of ZnO. This review will enhance the knowledge about the advancement in ZnO and will help in synthesizing new ZnO-based materials with modified structural and photocatalytic properties.

Influence of S doping on structural, optical and visible light photocatalytic activity of ZnO thin films

Transition metal (Mn, Co and Cu) doped ZnO nanorods were prepared on thin film by hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological, optical and antibacterial properties of thin films were studied by using X- ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning e lectron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X- ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Formation of hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO was confirmed by XRD analysis. The band gap of TM doped ZnO was estimated from the optical transmission spectra recorded in the wavelength range, 300-800 n m. FE-SEM images showed the well-defined hexagonal shape ZnO nanorods and it was confirmed that TM doping decreases the aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods. The bactericidal efficiency of TM doped ZnO nanorods were investigated against a Gram negative (Escherichi a coli) and a Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) b acteria. The result showed that TM doped ZnO nanorods enhances the antibacterial activity of pure ZnO nan orods.
