We describe the space–time finite element techniques we developed for computation of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems. Among these techniques are the deforming-spatial-domain/stabilized space–time (DSD/SST) formulation and its special version, and the mesh update methods, including the solid-extension mesh moving technique (SEMMT). Also among these techniques are the block-iterative, quasi-direct and direct coupling methods for the solution of the fully discretized, coupled fluid and structural mechanics equations. We present some test computations for the mesh moving techniques described. We also present numerical examples where the fluid is governed by the Navier– Stokes equations of incompressible flows and the structure is governed by the membrane and cable equations. Overall, we demonstrate that the techniques we have developed have increased the scope and accuracy of the methods used in computation of FSI problems. � 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Space-time finite element techniques for computation of fluid-structure interactions

The smoothed finite element methods (S-FEM) are a family of methods formulated through carefully designed combinations of the standard FEM and some of the techniques from the meshfree methods. Studies have proven that S-FEM models behave softer than the FEM counterparts using the same mesh structure, often produce more accurate solutions, higher convergence rates, and much less sensitivity to mesh distortion. They work well with triangular or tetrahedral mesh that can be automatically generated, and hence are ideal for automated computations and adaptive analyses. Some S-FEM models can also produce upper bound solution for force driving problems, which is an excellent unique complementary feature to FEM. Because of these attractive properties, S-FEM has been applied to numerous problems in the disciplines of material mechanics, biomechanics, fracture mechanics, plates and shells, dynamics, acoustics, heat transfer and fluid–structure interactions. This paper reviews the developments and applications of the S-FEM in the past ten years. We hope this review can shed light on further theoretical development of S-FEM and more complex practical applications in future.

Smoothed Finite Element Methods (S-FEM): An Overview and Recent Developments

In ocean engineering, the applications are usually related to a free surface which brings so many interesting physical phenomena (e.g. water waves, impacts, splashing jets, etc.). To model these complex free surface flows is a tough and challenging task for most computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers which work in the Eulerian framework. As a Lagrangian and meshless method, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) offers a convenient tracking for different complex boundaries and a straightforward satisfaction for different boundary conditions. Therefore SPH is robust in modeling complex hydrodynamic problems characterized by free surface boundaries, multiphase interfaces or material discontinuities. Along with the rapid development of the SPH theory, related numerical techniques and high-performance computing technologies, SPH has not only attracted much attention in the academic community, but also gradually gained wide applications in industrial circles. This paper is dedicated to a review of the recent developments of SPH method and its typical applications in fluid-structure interactions in ocean engineering. Different numerical techniques for improving numerical accuracy, satisfying different boundary conditions, improving computational efficiency, suppressing pressure fluctuations and preventing the tensile instability, etc., are introduced. In the numerical results, various typical fluid-structure interaction problems or multiphase problems in ocean engineering are described, modeled and validated. The prospective developments of SPH in ocean engineering are also discussed.

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics and its applications in fluid-structure interactions

To address the computational challenges associated with contact between moving interfaces, such as those in cardiovascular fluid–structure interaction (FSI), parachute FSI, and flapping-wing aerodynamics, we introduce a space–time (ST) interface-tracking method that can deal with topology change (TC). In cardiovascular FSI, our primary target is heart valves. The method is a new version of the deforming-spatial-domain/stabilized space–time (DSD/SST) method, and we call it ST-TC. It includes a master–slave system that maintains the connectivity of the “parent” mesh when there is contact between the moving interfaces. It is an efficient, practical alternative to using unstructured ST meshes, but without giving up on the accurate representation of the interface or consistent representation of the interface motion. We explain the method with conceptual examples and present 2D test computations with models representative of the classes of problems we are targeting.

Space–time interface-tracking with topology change (ST-TC)

Flow problems with moving boundaries and interfaces include fluid–structure interaction (FSI) and a number of other classes of problems, have an important place in engineering analysis and design, and offer some formidable computational challenges. Bringing solution and analysis to them motivated the Deforming-Spatial-Domain/Stabilized Space–Time (DSD/SST) method and also the variational multiscale version of the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method (ALE-VMS). Since their inception, these two methods and their improved versions have been applied to a diverse set of challenging problems with a common core computational technology need. The classes of problems solved include free-surface and two-fluid flows, fluid–object and fluid–particle interaction, FSI, and flows with solid surfaces in fast, linear or rotational relative motion. Some of the most challenging FSI problems, including parachute FSI, wind-turbine FSI and arterial FSI, are being solved and analyzed with the DSD/SST and ALE-VMS methods as core technologies. Better accuracy and improved turbulence modeling were brought with the recently-introduced VMS version of the DSD/SST method, which is called DSD/SST-VMST (also ST-VMS). In specific classes of problems, such as parachute FSI, arterial FSI, ship hydrodynamics, fluid–object interaction, aerodynamics of flapping wings, and wind-turbine aerodynamics and FSI, the scope and accuracy of the FSI modeling were increased with the special ALE-VMS and ST FSI techniques targeting each of those classes of problems. This article provides an overview of the core ALE-VMS and ST FSI techniques, their recent versions, and the special ALE-VMS and ST FSI techniques. It also provides examples of challenging problems solved and analyzed in parachute FSI, arterial FSI, ship hydrodynamics, aerodynamics of flapping wings, wind-turbine aerodynamics, and bridge-deck aerodynamics and vortex-induced vibrations.

Engineering Analysis and Design with ALE-VMS and Space–Time Methods

This paper presents a novel numerical method for simulating the fluid---structure interaction (FSI) problems when blood flows over aortic valves. The method uses the immersed boundary/element method and the smoothed finite element method and hence it is termed as IS-FEM. The IS-FEM is a partitioned approach and does not need a body-fitted mesh for FSI simulations. It consists of three main modules: the fluid solver, the solid solver and the FSI force solver. In this work, the blood is modeled as incompressible viscous flow and solved using the characteristic-based-split scheme with FEM for spacial discretization. The leaflets of the aortic valve are modeled as Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic materials and solved using smoothed finite element method (or S-FEM). The FSI force is calculated on the Lagrangian fictitious fluid mesh that is identical to the moving solid mesh. The octree search and neighbor-to-neighbor schemes are used to detect efficiently the FSI pairs of fluid and solid cells. As an example, a 3D idealized model of aortic valve is modeled, and the opening process of the valve is simulated using the proposed IS-FEM. Numerical results indicate that the IS-FEM can serve as an efficient tool in the study of aortic valve dynamics to reveal the details of stresses in the aortic valves, the flow velocities in the blood, and the shear forces on the interfaces. This tool can also be applied to animal models studying disease processes and may ultimately translate to a new adaptive methods working with magnetic resonance images, leading to improvements on diagnostic and prognostic paradigms, as well as surgical planning, in the care of patients.
