Journal ArticleDOI
Women and girls in resource poor countries experience much greater exposure to household air pollutants than men: Results from Uganda and Ethiopia.
TL;DR: There was a similar pattern of exposure by age and gender in both countries and when assessed by CO measurement and there was a strong agreement between optical and gravimetric devices measurements although optical devices tended to overestimate exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of partial fuel switch on household air pollutants in sub-Sahara Africa
TL;DR: Monitoring real-time PM2.5 and CO concentrations in 35 households in Cameroon and Uganda indicates that partial switching from solid fuels to biogas is not sufficient and continues to produce concentrations of household air pollution that are likely to harm the health of those exposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measuring Air Quality for Advocacy in Africa (MA3): Feasibility and Practicality of Longitudinal Ambient PM2.5 Measurement Using Low-Cost Sensors
Babatunde Awokola,Babatunde Awokola,Babatunde Awokola,Gabriel Okello,Kevin Mortimer,Kevin Mortimer,Chris P. Jewell,Annette Erhart,Sean Semple +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that it is reasonably practicable and feasible to establish a network of low-cost devices to provide data on local PM2.5 concentrations in SSA countries to raise public, societal and policymaker awareness about air pollution across SSA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Knowledge, opinions and compliance related to the 100% smoke-free law in hospitality venues in Kampala, Uganda: cross-sectional results from the KOMPLY Project.
Shannon Gravely,Kellen Namusisi Nyamurungi,Steven Ndugwa Kabwama,Gabriel Okello,Lindsay Robertson,Kelvin Khow Chuan Heng,Achiri Elvis Ndikum,Adeniyi Oginni,Jean Christophe Rusatira,Socrates Kakoulides,Socrates Kakoulides,Mark D. Huffman,Salim Yusuf,Salim Yusuf,Eduardo Bianco +14 more
TL;DR: In the early phase of Uganda’s smoke-free law, the level of compliance in hospitality venues settings in Kampala was suboptimal and civil society and the media have strong potential to inform and educate the hospitality industry and smokers of the benefits and requirements of the smoke- free law.
Journal ArticleDOI
Smoke-free spaces: a decade of progress, a need for more?
Sean Semple,Ruaraidh Dobson,Rachel O'Donnell,Emilia Zainal Abidin,Olena Tigova,Gabriel Okello,Esteve Fernández +6 more
TL;DR: Restrictions and policies on use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in smoke-free settings require more research to determine the benefits and implications of bystanders’ exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol, dual use and smoking cessation.
