TLDR
There was a similar pattern of exposure by age and gender in both countries and when assessed by CO measurement and there was a strong agreement between optical and gravimetric devices measurements although optical devices tended to overestimate exposure.

Exposure to Wood Smoke and Associated Health Effects in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

TL;DR: There is high level of exposure to wood smoke in SSA and this exposure is associated with a number of adverse health effects and there is urgent need for aggressive programs to reduce wood smoke exposure in this population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Solid fuel users' perceptions of household solid fuel use in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review

TL;DR: It is suggested that interventions need to be locally situated and community-led and a deeper understanding of perceptions of HAP could be obtained using participatory and innovative research methods.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cardiovascular Effects of Indoor Air Pollution from Solid Fuel: Relevance to Sub-Saharan Africa.

TL;DR: Premature cardiovascular deaths and disability can be averted in low-middle income countries by addressing biomass fuel usage by the most disadvantaged settings by addressing improved housing and better ventilation, as well as increasing access to affordable clean cooking energy.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; sum of years lived with disability [YLD] and years of life lost [YLL]) attributable to the independent effects of 67 risk factors and clusters of risk factors for 21 regions in 1990 and 2010.

Indoor air pollution from biomass combustion and acute respiratory infections in Kenya: an exposure-response study

TL;DR: With the best estimate of the exposure-response relation, it is found that ARI and ALRI are increasing concave functions of average daily exposure to PM(10), with the rate of increase declining for exposures above about 1000-2000 mg/m(3).

Quantifying human exposure to air pollution - moving from static monitoring to spatio-temporally resolved personal exposure assessment

TL;DR: A novel conceptual model for the integrated assessment of human exposure to air pollutants taking into account latest technological capabilities and contextual information is proposed.

Indoor aerosols: from personal exposure to risk assessment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed existing literature to identify state-of-the-art experimental techniques used for personal exposure assessment; compare exposure levels reported for domestic/school settings in different countries, assess the contribution of outdoor background vs indoor sources to personal exposure; and examine scientific understanding of the risks posed by personal exposure to indoor aerosols.
