Fear of the coronavirus (COVID-19): Predictors in an online study conducted in March 2020.
Gaëtan Mertens,Gaëtan Mertens,Lotte Gerritsen,Stefanie Duijndam,Elske Salemink,Iris M. Engelhard +5 more
TL;DR: Four predictors of fear of the coronavirus were found in a simultaneous regression analysis and 16 different topics of concern were identified based on participants’ open-ended responses, including the health of loved ones, health care systems overload, and economic consequences.
Journal ArticleDOI
Navigating the garden of forking paths for data exclusions in fear conditioning research
Tina B. Lonsdorf,Maren Klingelhöfer-Jens,Marta Andreatta,Marta Andreatta,Tom Beckers,Anastasia Chalkia,Anna Gerlicher,Valerie L. Jentsch,Shira Meir Drexler,Gaëtan Mertens,Jan Richter,Rachel Sjouwerman,Julia Wendt,Christian J. Merz +13 more
TL;DR: It is illustrated how flexibility in data collection and analysis can be avoided, which will benefit the robustness and replicability of research findings and can be expected to be applicable to other fields of research that involve a learning element.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimism, mindfulness, and resilience as potential protective factors for the mental health consequences of fear of the coronavirus.
TL;DR: This paper investigated whether positive personality traits such as optimism, mindfulness, and resilience may protect against negative mental health consequences (i.e., fear of the coronavirus, depression, stress, and anxiety) of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review on the effects of verbal instructions in human fear conditioning: Empirical findings, theoretical considerations, and future directions.
Gaëtan Mertens,Gaëtan Mertens,Yannick Boddez,Dieuwke Sevenster,Iris M. Engelhard,Jan De Houwer +5 more
TL;DR: This review considers both the effects of verbal instructions on fear responses in the absence of CS-US pairings as well as the way in which verbal instructions moderate fear established via CS- US pairings.
Journal ArticleDOI
The contextual malleability of approach-avoidance training effects: approaching or avoiding fear conditioned stimuli modulates effects of approach-avoidance training.
TL;DR: Evidence is provided for the malleability of the AAT effect when strongly valenced stimuli are approached or avoided by introducing a regularity between the approach-avoidance actions and a positive or negative stimulus.
