Synergistic effect of hydrogen induction with biofuel obtained from winery waste (grapeseed oil) for CI engine application

The present work is mapped to scrutinize the consequence of biodiesel and gaseous fuel properties, and their impact on compression-ignition (CI) engine combustion and emission characteristics in single and dual fuel operation. Biodiesel prepared from non-edible oil source derived from Thevetia peruviana belonging to the plant family of Apocynaceaeis. The fuel has been referred as methyl ester of Thevetia peruviana (METP) and adopted as pilot fuel for the effective combustion of compressed gaseous fuel of hydrogen. This investigation is an effort to augment the engine performance of a biodiesel-gaseous fueled diesel engine operated under varied engine parameters. Subsequently, consequences of gas flow rate, injection timing, gas entry type, and manifold gas injection on the modified dual-fuel engine using conventional mechanical fuel injections (CMFIS) for optimum engine performance were investigated. Fuel consumption, CO, UHC, and smoke formations are spotted to be less besides higher NOx emissions compared to CMFIS operation. The fuel burning features such as ignition delay, burning interval, and variation of pressure and heat release rates with crank angle are scrutinized and compared with base fuel. Sustained research in this direction can convey practical engine technology, concerning fuel combinations in the dual fuel mode, paving the way to alternatives which counter the continued fossil fuel utilization that has detrimental impacts on the climate.

The high degree of the world’s dependency on energy related with the expected future depletion of the worldwide petroleum reserves has led to big efforts in search for alternative energy sources such as nuclear, geothermal, biomass source etc. Alcohols, biomass based fuels, either single or blended with conventional petroleum based fuels are the most important alternative fuels for internal combustion engines [1]. Ecological environment and pollution is one of many problems solved in vehicles production that cause the rice of ecological requirements. Now we have standard Euro V [16]. The previous detailed investigations [7, 10] demonstrate than regulation of fuel supply system is not simple according to exhaust emission parameters like CO, HC, and O2, and the air-fuel ratio is not homologous to these parameters. The outer characteristics, power and torque of internal combustion engines, are associated with ecological requirements by decreasing their limit values, because we cannot adjust performance of the fuel supply system to optimal characteristics when ecological requirements should be satisfied. Ecological requirements create special difficulties when solving the problem of alternative fuels using in internal combustion engines. The analysis of environment pollution is very complicated, because many factors have an influence on exhaust emission contents [14]. The problem of energy resources is the theme considered with growing attention every year on a world scale. Crisis shaking economy of the whole planet motivates to deal with the issue of energy resources much deeper. Vehicle manufacturers are more often talking about alternative energy resources and alternative cars: electro-mobiles, bio-fuel-driven engines, hydrogen internal combustion aggregates. The greatest vehicle manufacturers invest hundreds of millions into the investigation of a hydrogen engine. Specialists make predictions that hydrogen is almost an inexhaustible resource, without any pollution of environment; just we need to improve hydrogen extraction ways [9 – 11]. Efficiency of an internal combustion engine is improved by fuel enrichment with hydrogen. This is achieved by hydrogen injection into fuel mixture in the intake manifold [4, 8]. Effect of hydrogen enrichment on the combustion characteristics of a biofuel diesel engine

Abstract In this experimental study, the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the performance, combustion, and emissions of a diesel engine using Sterculia foetida seed oil biodiesel (SFOME20) was investigated. The novelty of the present study is the surface modification of GNPs with a lipophilic surfactant at different ratios to achieve stable dispersion of GNPs in fuel blends. The homogeneity of the nano-additives in the fuel was tested by ultraviolet spectrometry, and an optimized amount of surfactant was found. The GNPs are dispersed in SFOME20 in different compositions such as 25, 50 and 75 ppm. The experiments were performed at a constant speed under different load conditions. Significant improvements in performance were oberved: brake thermal efficiencywas increased by 8.48%, and brake-specific fuel consumption was decreased by 16.53%. Emission levels Hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)) were reduced by 28.3%, 24.16% and 10.43%, respectively, at 50 ppm in SFOME20. Significant improvement in combustion parameters was noted in the form of reduced ignition delay (ID), decreased combustion duration, and improved peak pressure and heat release rate under full load conditions. The GNPs were found to be promising additives for biodiesel blends to improve the overall performance, combustion and emission characteristics of the engine.

Effect of dispersant added graphene nanoplatelets with diesel–Sterculia foetida seed oil biodiesel blends on diesel engine: engine combustion, performance and exhaust emissions

In the current research, the engine performance, combustion, and emission parameters of biodiesel mixture 20% Tamarind oil methyl ester and 80% Diesel (B20) with the inclusion of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in different concentrations (25.50 and 75 ppm) and 10% v/v dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as fuel additive investigated using a single-cylinder, 4-stroke, direct injection (DI), compression ignition (CI) engine. The nano fuel blends were prepared through the ultrasonication process. The ratio of 1:4 TiO2: QPAN80 was produced higher stability and consistency out of five trials. TiO2 were characterized using FESEM, HR-TEM, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray diffraction. Fuel properties were determined as per the ASTM standards. Engine tests were carried out to determine the engine performance under varied loads such as 25, 50, 75, and 100% while keeping a uniform speed of 1500 rpm. The maximum reduction in BSFC, CO, HC, and NOx were found to be 17.64%, 9.49%, 7.81%, and 6.53%, and the increased BTE was observed to be 6.13% for B20T50DMC10 compared to B20 blend at full load. Thus, the combined effect of TiO2 and DMC served excellent engine performance, combustion, and emission characteristics in CI engine operation.
