Stomatal pores are microscopic structures on the epidermis of leaves formed by 2 specialized guard cells that control the exchange of water vapor and CO2 between plants and the atmosphere. Stomatal size (S) and density (D) determine maximum leaf diffusive (stomatal) conductance of CO2 (gcmax) to sites of assimilation. Although large variations in D observed in the fossil record have been correlated with atmospheric CO2, the crucial significance of similarly large variations in S has been overlooked. Here, we use physical diffusion theory to explain why large changes in S necessarily accompanied the changes in D and atmospheric CO2 over the last 400 million years. In particular, we show that high densities of small stomata are the only way to attain the highest gcmax values required to counter CO2“starvation” at low atmospheric CO2 concentrations. This explains cycles of increasing D and decreasing S evident in the fossil history of stomata under the CO2 impoverished atmospheres of the Permo-Carboniferous and Cenozoic glaciations. The pattern was reversed under rising atmospheric CO2 regimes. Selection for small S was crucial for attaining high gcmax under falling atmospheric CO2 and, therefore, may represent a mechanism linking CO2 and the increasing gas-exchange capacity of land plants over geologic time.

A new classification and linear sequence of the gymnosperms based on previous molecular and morphological phylogenetic and other studies is presented. Currently accepted genera are listed for each family and arranged according to their (probable) phylogenetic position. A full synonymy is provided, and types are listed for accepted genera. An index to genera assists in easy access to synonymy and family placement of genera.

A new classification and linear sequence of extant gymnosperms

Fundamental differences in the distribution of oceans and landmasses in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres potentially impact patterns of biological diversity in the two areas. The evolutionary history of conifers provides an opportunity to explore these dynamics, because the majority of extant conifer species belong to lineages that have been broadly confined to the Northern or Southern Hemisphere during the Cenozoic. Incorporating genetic information with a critical review of fossil evidence, we developed an age-calibrated phylogeny sampling ∼80% of living conifer species. Most extant conifer species diverged recently during the Neogene within clades that generally were established during the later Mesozoic, but lineages that diversified mainly in the Southern Hemisphere show a significantly older distribution of divergence ages than their counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere. Our tree topology and divergence times also are best fit by diversification models in which Northern Hemisphere conifer lineages have higher rates of species turnover than Southern Hemisphere lineages. The abundance of recent divergences in northern clades may reflect complex patterns of migration and range shifts during climatic cycles over the later Neogene leading to elevated rates of speciation and extinction, whereas the scattered persistence of mild, wetter habitats in the Southern Hemisphere may have favored the survival of older lineages.

Two types of coniferous ovulate cones borne on leafy twigs are described from the Lower Cretaceous Kachaike Formation in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The fossils are impressions and compressions with well‐preserved cuticles. Morphology, anatomy, and ultrastructure were studied using LM, SEM, and TEM. Ovulate cones were assigned to Athrotaxis ungeri (Halle) Florin of the taxodiaceous Cupressaceae and Kachaikestrobus acuminatus gen. et sp. nov. of the Cheirolepidiaceae. This latter taxon is characterized by terminal elongate cones borne on twigs with Brachyphyllum leaves, cone scales densely and helically disposed, broad bracts with an accentuated acuminate apex fused at their bases to eight‐lobed ovuliferous dwarf shoots shorter than the bracts, and an epimatium covering at least one ovule that has preserved only the outer integument and the megaspore membrane. . MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF A FERN GROWING UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS FROM THE APTIAN OF SANTA CRUZ, ARGENTINA. The morphology and anatomy of pteridophyte fronds attached to rhizomes with adventitious roots from the Aptian Anfiteatro de Tico Formation, Santa Cruz province, Argentina are described. The fossils consist of impressions and compressions preserved in lithofacies dominated mainly by volcanic ash-fall. Observations made with scanning electron microscope on rhizomes and rachides revealed the presence of primary xylem tissues; protoxylem, metaxylem fibers and parenchyma. According to the general morphology, this fern is included in the morphogenus Cladophlebis Brongniart. Comparisons made with known Cladophlebis species of Argentina show that the material here studied has different morphological features.
