Antimicrobial potentials of medicinal plant's extract and their derived silver nanoparticles: A focus on honey bee pathogen

Background: Several species of the genus Launaea are used in folk medicine such as in bitter stomachic, skin diseases, and reported to have antitumor, insecticide, and cytotoxic activities. The antimicrobial activities of coumarin constituents and the neuropharmacological properties have been investigated as well. In this study, the chemical composition of essential oils from Launaea resedifolia L. has been identified using the ordinary GC-MS technique to reveal the presence of 19 compounds dominated by dioctyl phthalate. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the crude oil has been carried out using disk diffusion method against seven bacteria strains. Results: Nineteen compounds of essential oil of L. resedifolia L. were identified, representing 86.68% of the total oil. The compounds were identified by spectral comparison to be mainly esters, alcohols, ketones, and terpenes. The principal constituents are dioctyl phthalate (39.84%), Decanoic acid, decyl ester (12.09%), 11-Octadecenal (11.24%), and Eucalyptol (07.31%), while others were present in relatively small amounts. As far as antibacterial essays are concerned, it was found that the oils are active against most of the tested bacterial strains. Conclusion: A major constituent in visible parts was Dioctyl phthalate (39.84%) and the yield of essential oils was 0.9%. These extracts reveal in vitro antibacterial activity on the studied bacterial, confirmed by the inhibition zone diameter ranging from 11 to 37 mm and a MIC value between 0.09 and 0.69 depending on the microorganism being tested.

The present study was aimed to assess the plants antimicrobial effects such as Tamarisk, March, acetone and mango kernel. The aqueous and ethanol extract of the plants and also its smoke was prepared in concentrations of 50 and 25 mg/mL. The bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida Lbyknz, Enterococcus faecalis were cultured by linear method. Impregnated extract discs were seeded onto the medium and the diameter of inhibition zone was measured following incubated for 24 h. The mango kernel extract by ethanol showed maximum inhibition zone diameter. Despite the weak antibacterial effect of aqueous and ethanol extract of Tamarix, Smoke extract of this plant shows good antimicrobial properties. Different extracts of March showed antimicrobial effects only on candidate l bykns. Aqueous and ethanol extracts of acetone did not show significant effects.

In this study, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal activities of Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. collected from Duhok (Iraq) were determined. Ethanol, methanol and dichloromethane extracts of the fruit part of plant were obtained. Antioxidant potential was determined with TAS and TOS kits using ethanol extracts. Antibacterial and antifungal activity were determined using agar dilution method. Antibacterial activity was determined against 6 bacterial strains ( Staphylococcus aureus, S. aureus MRSA, Enterococcus faecalis , Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii ). Antifungal activity was determined against Candida albicans, C. krusei and C. glabrata . As a result of the studies, it was determined that plant extracts have high antioxidant activity. It was also found to be effective against bacteria at 25-400 µg/mL concentrations. Plant extracts were found to be more effective against gram negative bacteria. It was found to be effective against Candida species at 400-800 µg/mL concentrations. As a result, it was determined that the fruit parts of plant could be a natural antioxidant and antibacterial source.

Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Different Extracts of Silybum marianum Collected from Duhok (Iraq)

Methanolic and aqueous extracts of nine Algerian plant species used in folk medicine were investigated for their antimicrobial activities against five bacteria strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter aerogenes and one fungus: Candida albicans . The plants exhibited important antimicrobial activity with a significant difference between the different plants. The most active plants were Tamarix gallica, Rhetinolepis sp and Muscari Comosun. Most of the tested plant extracts were active against Candida albicans. Of all extracts, the Methanolic extract of Rhetinolepis sp was the most active (diameter ranges between 15mm and 22mm) whereas, the aqueous extract of Tamarix Gallica was the most active of all tested aqueous extracts (Diameter ranges between 10 mm and 17 mm).

Antimicrobial activity of nine medicinal plants growing in the south of Algeria.

This work reports the phytochemical profile phenolic content and flavonoid, in vitro antioxidant against DPPH, s-carotene radical and total antioxidant activity of methanolic leaves extract from Tamarix gallica and Tamarix articulata. Formore, HPLC analysis for identification of individual polyphenols was identification in different phenolic groups and the quantification are also described. The quantification of total phenolic and flavonoids content realized by spectrophotometric methods. The antiradical capacities of extracts were evaluated against DPPH free radical and phosphomolybdenum method. Total phenolic contents and flavonoid from an extract of Tamarix gallica were founded high against Tamarix articulata, 334.19±8.47, 395.62±6.23 mg GAE/g DW for phenolic content and 159.73±6.28, 117.47±4.04 mg CE/g DW respectively. The HPLC analysis showed that at least 6 considerable phenolic compounds of leaves extract exist for the two extracts, the major ones being vanillic acid, naringin, and caffeic acid. Similar results for antioxidant activity leaves extract from Tamarix gallica exhibited strong inhibition of free radical against DPPH against Tamarix articulata IC50=5.70±0.18, 7.69±0.11 µg/ml and total antioxidant activity 341.69±9.28, 287.64±8.72 mg GAE/g DW respectively. The obtained results suggest that Tamarix gallica and Tamarix articulata could be a promising source for new drugs because of its antioxidant properties and phenolic compounds.

Phenolic Content, HPLC Analysis and Antioxidant Activity Extract from Tamarix gallica and Tamarix articulata Growing in Southeast of Algeria

In this study we investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities of ethanolic leaves extracts of three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera L. namely: “Ghars”, “Deglet Nour” and “Hamraya”. The assessment of the antioxidant potential of crude leaves extracts, using superoxide anions inhibition, DPPH and total antioxidant activity essays, was carried out. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts were determined by measuring the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production. Moreover, the antidiabetic effect was evaluated by inhibition of α-amylase enzymes. The total phenolic content measured by Folin-ciocalteu method was as well conducted. The raw leaves extracts of the selected varieties was found to contain a high content of total phenolic content (342.45 mg GAE/gDW for GE) and therefore exhibited a higher antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of radicals scavenging activity against DPPH and superoxide anion (IC50 = 7.44 μg/mL and 39.11 μg/mL respectively). The three varieties exhibited significant inhibition nitric oxide using in-vitro assay (IC50 = 240.28 μg/mL for GE). The extracts also displayed high inhibition actions against α-amylase enzymes. The results suggest that the leaves of the three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera can be considered as a good source of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammation drugs as well as potent antidiabetic medicine.
