Journal ArticleDOI
A Phase II Study with Antioxidants, Both in the Diet and Supplemented, Pharmaconutritional Support, Progestagen, and Anti-Cyclooxygenase-2 Showing Efficacy and Safety in Patients with Cancer-Related Anorexia/Cachexia and Oxidative Stress
Giovanni Mantovani,Antonio Macciò,Clelia Madeddu,Giulia Gramignano,Maria Rita Lusso,Roberto Serpe,Elena Massa,Giorgio Astara,Laura Deiana +8 more
TL;DR: The efficacy and safety of the integrated treatment based on a pharmaconutritional support, antioxidants, and drugs, all given orally, in a population of advanced cancer patients with cancer-related anorexia/cachexia and oxidative stress were shown to be safe.
Applied nutritional investigation Efficacy of L-carnitine administration on fatigue, nutritional status, oxidative stress, and related quality of life in 12 advanced cancer patients undergoing anticancer therapy
Giulia Gramignano,Maria Rita Lusso,Clelia Madeddu,Elena Massa,Roberto Serpe,Laura Deiana,Giovanna Lamonica,Mariele Dessì,C. Spiga,Giorgio Astara,Antonio Macciò,Giovanni Mantovani +11 more
TL;DR: Improvement of symptoms with respect to fatigue and quality of life in relation to oxidative stress may be explained mainly by an increase in lean body mass, which may be considered the most important nutritional or functional parameter in assessing the cachectic state of patients.

Efficacy of l-carnitine administration on fatigue, nutritional status, oxidative stress, and related quality of life in 12 advanced cancer patients undergoing anticancer therapy.
Giulia Gramignano,Maria Rita Lusso,Clelia Madeddu,Elena Massa,Roberto Serpe,Laura Deiana,Giovanna Lamonica,Mariele Dessì,C. Spiga,Giorgio Astara,Antonio Macciò,Giovanni Mantovani +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the efficacy and safety of LC supplementation in a population of patients who had advanced cancer and developed fatigue, high blood levels of reactive oxygen species, or both was evaluated.
Journal Article
Cancer-Related Anorexia/Cachexia Syndrome and Oxidative Stress: An Innovative Approach beyond Current Treatment
Giovanni Mantovani,Clelia Madeddu,Antonio Macciò,Giulia Gramignano,Maria Rita Lusso,Elena Massa,Giorgio Astara,Roberto Serpe +7 more
TL;DR: The treatment has been shown to be effective for clinical response, increase of lean body mass, decrease of reactive oxygen species and proinflammatory cytokines, and improvement of quality of life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized phase III clinical trial of a combined treatment with carnitine + celecoxib ± megestrol acetate for patients with cancer-related anorexia/cachexia syndrome
Clelia Madeddu,Mariele Dessì,Filomena Panzone,Roberto Serpe,Giorgia Antoni,M.C. Cau,L. Montaldo,Quirico Mela,Marco Mura,Giorgio Astara,Francesca Maria Tanca,Antonio Macciò,Giovanni Mantovani +12 more
TL;DR: This simple, feasible, effective, safe, low cost with favorable cost-benefit profile, two-drug approach could be suggested in the clinical practice to implement CACS treatment.
