Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology of West Nile in Europe and in the Mediterranean Basin
Paolo Calistri,Armando Giovannini,Zdenek Hubálek,Aurelia Ionescu,Federica Monaco,Giovanni Savini,Rossella Lelli +6 more
TL;DR: Species of Culex amongst mosquitoes and magpies, carrion crows and rock pigeons amongst resident birds are the most probable species involved in this hypothetical WND endemic cycle.
Journal ArticleDOI
First human case of Usutu virus neuroinvasive infection, Italy, August-September 2009.
Monica Pecorari,G. Longo,William Gennari,Antonella Grottola,Anna Sabbatini,Sara Tagliazucchi,Giovanni Savini,Federica Monaco,Maria Luisa Simone,Rossella Lelli,Fabio Rumpianesi +10 more
TL;DR: The first worldwide case of Usutu virus (USUV) neuroinvasive infection in a patient with diffuse large B cell lymphoma who presented with fever and neurological symptoms and was diagnosed with meningoencephalitits is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vaccines against bluetongue in Europe
TL;DR: After the incursion of bluetongue virus (BTV) into European Mediterranean countries in 1998, vaccination was used in an effort to minimize direct economic losses to animal production, reduce virus circulation and allow safe movements of animals from endemic areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bluetongue virus isolations from midges belonging to the Obsoletus complex (Culicoides, Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Italy.
Giovanni Savini,Maria Goffredo,Federica Monaco,A. Di Gennaro,Maria Assunta Cafiero,L. Baldi,P. De Santis,R. Meiswinkel,V. Caporale +8 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that a species other than C imicola is involved in the current re-emergence of bluetongue in the Mediterranean Basin, but whether it is C obsoletus sensu stricto or C scoticus, or both, is uncertain.
Journal ArticleDOI
European surveillance for West Nile virus in mosquito populations.
Olivier Engler,Giovanni Savini,Anna Papa,Jordi Figuerola,Martin H. Groschup,Helge Kampen,Jolyon M. Medlock,Alexander G.C. Vaux,Anthony J. TL;DR: The current status of WNV in mosquito populations across Europe is reviewed and how this is informing the understanding of virus epidemiology is reviewed, and some of the difficulties encountered when applying a cost-effective surveillance programme are highlighted.
