Journal ArticleDOI
PCR Detection, Characterization, and Distribution of Virulence Genes in Aeromonas spp.
Cesar Isigidi Bin Kingombe,Geert Huys,Mauro Tonolla,M. John Albert,Jean Swings,Raffaele Peduzzi,Thomas Jemmi +6 more
TL;DR: This PCR-based method is rapid, sensitive, and specific for the detection of virulence factors of Aeromonas spp.
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition of bacterial and archaeal communities in freshwater sediments with different contamination levels (Lake Geneva, Switzerland)
TL;DR: Multiple factor analysis revealed that the microbial community composition and the environmental variables were correlated at the two sites, which suggests that in addition to environmental parameters, pollution may be one of the factors affecting microbial community structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for anaerobic oxidation of methane in sediments of a freshwater system (Lago di Cadagno).
Carsten J. Schubert,Francisco Vazquez,Tina Lösekann-Behrens,Katrin Knittel,Mauro Tonolla,Antje Boetius +5 more
TL;DR: Very high fractionation of methane during oxidation was observed in the uppermost sediment layers, where methane is oxidized most likely with sulfate-containing bottom waters, however, it could not exclude that other electron acceptors such as iron, or manganese might also be involved.
Journal ArticleDOI
Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry for the identification of clinically relevant bacteria.
TL;DR: MALDI-TOF MS represents a rapid, reliable and cost-effective identification technique for clinically relevant bacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
European surveillance for West Nile virus in mosquito populations.
Olivier Engler,Giovanni Savini,Anna Papa,Jordi Figuerola,Martin H. Groschup,Helge Kampen,Jolyon M. Medlock,Alexander G.C. Vaux,Anthony J. Wilson,Doreen Werner,Hanna Jöst,Maria Goffredo,Gioia Capelli,Valentina Federici,Mauro Tonolla,Nicola Patocchi,Eleonora Flacio,Jasmine Portmann,Anya Rossi-Pedruzzi,Spiros Mourelatos,Santiago Ruiz,Ana Vázquez,Mattia Calzolari,Paolo Bonilauri,Michele Dottori,Francis Schaffner,Alexander Mathis,Nicholas Johnson +27 more
TL;DR: The current status of WNV in mosquito populations across Europe is reviewed and how this is informing the understanding of virus epidemiology is reviewed, and some of the difficulties encountered when applying a cost-effective surveillance programme are highlighted.
