Shell model Monte Carlo methods

The present article gives a general discussion of the problems arising in a theory of elementary particles, together with a survey of papers1-6 that have been published on this subject in German periodicals. These papers deal with a special model for the theory of elementary particles that has been constructed to show some of the main features of such a theory; the author believes that the model does in fact represent a system of elementary particles and their interactions in a manner qualitatively suitable also for the real system of particles.

A scheme of the construction of theS-matrix according to the perturbation theory which is free of the ultraviolet divergences is suggested by the example of the one-component scalar quantized field. The causality is violated in small space-time region. The effects which are due to the causality violation at large distances are described by very high perturbation orders, and are therefore very small in the framework of the perturbation theory.

In § 1 ist auf die Moglichkeit, eine Begrenzung der Wahrscheinlichkeit der Stose schneller Teilchen (mit groser Energieubertragung) in relativistisch invarianter Weise einzufuhren, hingewiesen. In § 2 ist eine Modifikation des Hamiltonoperators der Quantenelektrodynamik vorgeschlagen, die die Schwierigkeit der Eigenenergie der Teilchen zu vermeiden gestattet. In § 3 ist die Berechnung der magnetischen und der Spinselbstenergie eines Elektrons nach der Methode von Waller und Oppenheimer durchgefuhrt.

On the quantum theory of fields (II)

STARTING from the assumption that the possibilities of defining and measuring high relative impulses are limited in a new way, because of the nature of β-ray forces (with participation of neutrinos) and because of the appearance of explosion showers in the high-energy collisions, an attempt is made to solve the convergence difficulties of quantum theory. The proposed solution is based on a new kind of algebra of quantum states and observables, and on the assumption of the existence of a new kind of indetermination arising from the interaction of high-energy particles with the measuring apparatus.
