TL;DR: 7 years after the start of the study the excess of stage I cancers in the study group largely outweighs the deficit of advanced cancers, and the results to the end of 1984 show a 31% reduction in mortality from breast cancer and a 25% reduced in the rate of stage II or more advanced breast cancers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Smoking and the Increased Risk of Contracting Spontaneous Pneumothorax
TL;DR: It is shown that smoking increased the relative risk of contracting a first spontaneous pneumothorax approximately ninefold among women and 22-fold among men and that there is a striking, statistically significant (p less than 0.001) dose-response relationship between smoking and the occurrence of SP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of routine one-stage ultrasound screening in pregnancy: a randomised controlled trial.
Urban Waldenström,Staffan Nilsson,Ole Fall,Ove Axelsson,Gunnar Eklund,Solveig Lindeberg,Ylva Sjodin +6 more
TL;DR: Among babies born to screened women, fewer were of birthweight less than 2500 g and mean birthweight was 42 g higher and for babies Born to screenedWomen who smoked it was 75 gHigher and for those of non-smokers 26 g higher, suggesting that screened women reduced smoking in response to watching their fetus on the scan.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality in relation to cigarette and pipe smoking: 16 years' observation of 25,000 Swedish men.
TL;DR: There was a close to linear increase in lung cancer risk in relation to the amount of tobacco smoked for cigarette, pipe, and cigar smokers, respectively and an increasing risk of ischaemic heart disease with amount smoked was seen among both cigarette and pipe smokers.
