Survey research in operations management: historical analyses

Hospital material management has been identified as one key cost containment lever to cope with steadily increasing healthcare costs in industrialized countries. The purpose of this work is to present the state-of-the-art of research on material logistics management in hospitals. Particular focus is given to articles that apply quantitative methods. Our contribution is threefold: First, we provide research guidance through categorizing literature and identifying major research streams. Second, we discuss applied methodologies and third, we identify future research directions. A systematic approach is undertaken in order to identify the relevant literature from 1998 to 2014. Applicable publications are categorized thematically and methodologically and future research opportunities are worked out. In total, 145 publications are identified and discussed in this work. The literature is categorized into four streams, i.e., (1) Supply and procurement, (2) Inventory management, (3) Distribution and scheduling, and (4) Holistic supply chain management. The use of optimization techniques is constantly gaining importance. The number of respective publications has continually grown and has peaked over the last three years. Optimization has been successfully applied in research streams (1), (2), and (3). Category (4) comprises a rather qualitative research field of literature dealing with supply chain management issues.

Material logistics in hospitals: A literature review

With the labor and material, equipments will be used in production processes, are one of the essential components of the production systems. Equipments used in production process are an important subject, effecting the system efficiency, the labor effectiveness and the product quality, and using inappropriate equipment effects all of this issues negatively. Equipment selection is a very important point for an efficient production system and is a complex and exhaustive problem necessitating the most proper selection among the various types of equipments seeming almost identical, generally. Therefore, an equipment selection problem is a multi-criteria decision making problem entailing taking into account of several criteria and generally involving linguistic datas. In this study, a multi-criteria decision making problem compromising a ranking due to criterias expressed in a linguistic way, concerning a welding machine selection problem of a company is handled. The vagueness of the linguistic terms in the evaluation process required employment of fuzzy numbers and accordingly the fuzzy version of PROMETHEE method, which is a multi-criteria ranking technique, is applied to the selection problem. The information obtained from F-PROMETHEE results is then used as a constraint in formulating a zero-one goal programming model. We demonstrated how a combined F-PROMETHEE and ZOGP model can be used for a real world application problem as an aid for equipment selection.

A combined approach for equipment selection: F-PROMETHEE method and zero-one goal programming

Compares the research done in the area of JIT implementation in the past decade, identifies critical JIT elements, and groups the elements into broader factors. An extensive literature search was conducted to identify over 130 JIT implementation articles published in both professional journals and proceedings. Initial screening process led to the identification of 105 JIT implementation research articles published since 1980. Each of these 105 articles was reviewed to identify 28 JIT implementation elements. These JIT implementation elements are subsequently grouped into five broader factors. Criteria as the measure of importance of these elements was based on the frequency of citation. The results obtained from this research show that elimination of waste and production strategy are the most specific critical factors of JIT implementation. Followed by three other critical factors: quality control and quality improvement, management commitment and employee participation, and vendor/supplier participation.

An application of zero-one goal programming in project selection and resource planning: a case study from the Woodward Governor Company

Presents a linear goal programming (LGP) model, which can be used to derive an optimal daily production schedule for JIT production systems. Also provides an explanation of how a detailed post‐optimal LGP analysis can enable a decision maker to examine the effects of production scheduling in a JIT “mixed‐model” production environment. To illustrate the informational efficacy of the proposed JIT‐based LGP model, presents an illustrative example.

A Multiple Objective Model for a Just‐in‐Time Manufacturing System Environment

Despite the limitations, this study is the first comparative empirical investigation of two relatively new materiel management systems applied in hospitals. The results show that hospital managers have significantly rated the possibility that more effective use of some materiel management resources can be achieved by adopting either a JIT or stockless system over conventional materiel management systems.

This article examines the impact of introducing computer technology in just‐in‐time (JIT) systems. Literature review has generally supported the notion that introducing computers within JIT production systems may enhance productivity. Also, the productivity of a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system may be enhanced by integrating it with the just‐in‐time (JIT) production system. This integrated production system is called the computer integrated just‐in‐time (CIJIT) production system. This empirical study provides strong evidence that integration of CIM and JIT can significantly improve a firm′s productivity and competitiveness.

Impact of Computer Technology on the Implementation of Just‐in‐time Production Systems

The purpose of this paper is to compare the implementation of short‐run (i.e., small lot‐size) statistical process control (SPC) techniques for manufacturing between the U.S. and Japan. Using U.S. and Japanese questionnaires, this research focuses on the use of several manufacturing management elements such as setup time, stability of process, and quality improvement. These elements are compared in terms of their respective countries’ short‐run SPC techniques implementation. Barriers to the implementation of short‐run SPC techniques are also examined. In addition, this research identifies current process control techniques used to support short‐run SPC in both countries. Results show how the significantly different short‐run SPC techniques are utilized in the U.S. and Japan.
