Materials for the plasma-facing components of fusion reactors

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the performance of tungsten surfaces under intense transient thermal loads is another critical issue, since the formation of a melt layer may favor the generation of highly activated dust particles.
Journal ArticleDOI

Deuterium permeation through Eurofer and α-alumina coated Eurofer

TL;DR: In this article, the deuterium permeability of α-alumina has been investigated at Eurofer in the temperature range 573-873 K at driving pressures 10 3 -10 5 Pa.
Journal ArticleDOI

Erbium oxide as a new promising tritium permeation barrier

TL;DR: In this paper, a new hydrogen isotope barrier material, erbium oxide Er2O3, or erbia, has been tested with thermal load test and permeation measurements to determine whether erbia is compatible with other materials at elevated temperatures and if it suppresses hydrogen transport.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vacuum plasma-sprayed tungsten on EUROFER and 316L: Results of characterisation and thermal loading tests

TL;DR: In this paper, mixed tungsten/steel interlayers were applied to reduce the residual and thermal stresses at the substrate-coating interface and to improve the adhesion of the coating.
Journal ArticleDOI

Self passivating W-based alloys as plasma-facing material

TL;DR: In this paper, binary and ternary tungsten alloys were synthesized by magnetron sputtering and the oxidation behavior was measured with a thermobalance set-up under synthetic air at temperatures up to 1273 K. Binary alloys of W-Si showed good self-passivation properties by forming a SiO 2 film at the surface.
