The growing global demand for sustainable technologies that improves the efficiency of petrochemical processes in the oil industry has driven advances in petroleum biotechnology in recent years Petroleum industry uses substantial amounts of petrochemical-based synthetic surfactants in its activities as mobilizing agents to increase the availability or recovery of hydrocarbons as well as many other applications related to extraction, treatment, cleaning and transportation However, biosurfactants have several potential applications for use across the oil processing chain and in the formulations of petrochemical products such as emulsifying/demulsifying agents, anticorrosive, biocides for sulphate-reducing bacteria, fuel formulation, extraction of bitumen from tar sands and many other innovative applications Due to their versatility and proven efficiency, biosurfactants are often presented as valuable versatile tools that can transform and modernise petroleum biotechnology in an attempt to provide a true picture of state of the art and directions or use in the oil industry We believe that biosurfactants are going to have a significant role in many future applications in the oil industries and in this review therefore, we highlight recent important relevant applications, patents disclosures and potential future applications for biosurfactants in petroleum and related industries

Biosurfactants: Promising Molecules for Petroleum Biotechnology Advances.

Biosurfactants-a new frontier for social and environmental safety: a mini review

Surfactants are a broad category of tensio-active biomolecules with multifunctional properties applications in diverse industrial sectors and processes. Surfactants are produced synthetically and biologically. The biologically derived surfactants (biosurfactants) are produced from microorganisms, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis Candida albicans, and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus as dominant species. Rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, mannosylerithritol lipids, surfactin, and emulsan are well known in terms of their biotechnological applications. Biosurfactants can compete with synthetic surfactants in terms of performance, with established advantages over synthetic ones, including eco-friendliness, biodegradability, low toxicity, and stability over a wide variability of environmental factors. However, at present, synthetic surfactants are a preferred option in different industrial applications because of their availability in commercial quantities, unlike biosurfactants. The usage of synthetic surfactants introduces new species of recalcitrant pollutants into the environment and leads to undesired results when a wrong selection of surfactants is made. Substituting synthetic surfactants with biosurfactants resolves these drawbacks, thus interest has been intensified in biosurfactant applications in a wide range of industries hitherto considered as experimental fields. This review, therefore, intends to offer an overview of diverse applications in which biosurfactants have been found to be useful, with emphases on petroleum biotechnology, environmental remediation, and the agriculture sector. The application of biosurfactants in these settings would lead to industrial growth and environmental sustainability.

Production of biosurfactant by Bacillus megaterium and its correlation with lipid peroxidation of Lactuca sativa

The present study concerns the bioremediation process of oil contaminated soil from Suez Oil Processing Company. Nineteen crude oil-degrading bacterial isolates were isolated from this oil-polluted area. Four bacterial species showed the highest growth rate on crude oil hydrocarbons. The bioremediation process was studied by pure and bacterial consortium. The oil contents in the different microcosms reduced up to 80% via bioremediation after 7 days. The Gas Chromatographic analysis of the crude oil remaining in different culture media after one week was determined. The nanoparticle and biosurfactant showed selective bioremediation enhancement for n- and iso- paraffins. The percentage biodegradation was reached into the maximum value in microcosm containing biosurfactant, nanoparticle and bacterial consortium of the best four bacterial strains into 90% after 7 days. The complete degradation of some different members of polyaromatics and the percentage biodegradation of other polyaromatics increased in different microcosms which investigated by HPLC analysis.

Enhancement the Bioremediation of Crude Oil by Nanoparticle and Biosurfactants

Bioremediation process of oil spill using fatty-lignocellulose sawdust and its enhancement effect

The present study deals with the disposal of MW in an eco-friendly manner to the environment and the production of valuable products from cheap waste. From the MW sample, fifteen bacterial isolates (B1–B15) have been isolated. The screening for the biological hydrolysis of MW by cellulases producing bacteria and total reducing sugar production (TRS) was studied. Bacterial isolates B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, and B10 were selected for their ability to hydrolyse MW and TRS production. The highest (TRS) were at 8528.1, 7636.1, 7189.8, 7152.9, 6564.1, and 6539.4 ​μg/mL produced by bacterial isolates B10, B2, B7, B6, B1 and B3 respectively. Carboxy methyl cellulase (CMCase), filter paperase (FPase), and avicelase production were studied. Bacterial isolate (B10) has the highest levels of CMCase (1576.5 U/mL), FPase (1421.4 U/mL), and Avicellase (2080.3 U/mL). Each selected bacterial isolate was tested for the production of biosurfactants. The highest drop displacement test and emulsification power, at 30 ​mm and 97%, respectively, were obtained from the biosurfactant. The isolate (B10) was identified as Bacillus subtilis DSM15029 by 16S rRNA. The effect of chemical and bio-surfactants on MW hydrolysis and cellulolytic enzyme production was carried out. The highest TRS, 9076.1 and 8367.6 ​μg/mL was observed using biosurfactant and Tween-80, respectively. The highest CMCase, FPase, and Avicellase activities (1643.5, 1590.73, and 2113.69 U/mL) were recorded with a biosurfactant. The batch fermentation of MW hydrolysate was performed with a biosurfactant. The highest bioethanol production (60.27 ​mL/L) was recorded after 72 ​h using GC analysis. • Fifteen bacterial strains from municipal waste. • Isolate B10 highest cellulolytic enzyme. • High cellulolytic enzyme with biosurfactant. • Biosurfactant enhancing bioethanol production.
