The contribution of solar photovoltaics (PV׳s) in generation of electric power is continually increasing. PV cells are commonly modelled as circuits. Finding appropriate circuit model parameters of PV cells is crucial for performance evaluation, control, efficiency computations and maximum power point tracking of solar PV systems. The problem of finding circuit model parameters of solar PV cells is referred to as “PV cell model parameter estimation problem,” and is highly attracted by researchers. In this paper, the existing research works on PV cell model parameter estimation problem are classified into three categories and the research works of those categories are reviewed. Based on the conducted review, some recommendations for future research are provided.

Identification of PV solar cells and modules parameters using the genetic algorithms: Application to maximum power extraction

In this paper, a technique based on genetic algorithms is proposed for improving the accuracy of solar cell parameters extracted using conventional techniques. The approach is based on formulating the parameter extraction as a search and optimization problem. Current–voltage data used were generated by simulating a two-diode solar cell model of specified parameters. The genetic algorithm search range that simulates the error in the extracted parameters was varied from ± 5t o±100% of the specified parameter values. Results obtained show that for a simulated error of ±5% in the solar cell model values, the deviation of the extracted parameters varied from 0.1 to 1% of the specified values. Even with a simulated error of as high as ±100%, the resulting deviation only varied from 2 to 36%. The performance of this technique is also shown to surpass the quasi-Newton method, a calculus-based search and optimization algorithm.

Mobile learning (M-learning) is a learning paradigm that utilizes the advantages of mobility and wireless technologies in the learning and education process It can be characterized by the ability to support and provide strong interaction between learners and instructors, offering high levels of learning motivation, collaboration, and flexibility to the learning activities Despite the increased popularity of M-learning, there is no complete and well-defined set of educational requirements for M-learning in higher education which considers both instructional design and M-learning design Therefore, this paper proposes a new educational requirements model for M-learning development and adoption in higher education This set of requirements has been built from a literature study with focus on standards for learning and mobile application software quality and guidelines This work presents the results of applying the proposed set of educational requirements on three different M-learning systems Instructional designers and educational software developers may find the requirements useful in the development of M-learning systems The effort described is part of an Omani-funded research project investigating the development, adoption and dissemination of M-learning in Oman

Toward Educational Requirements Model for Mobile Learning Development and Adoption in Higher Education

Hybrid renewable energy systems are becoming attractive for remote areas power generation applications due to advances in renewable energy technologies and increase in oil price. This paper presents a feasibility study of wind penetration into an existing diesel power plant of an isolated area known as Al Duqm in Oman. Both wind data and the actual load data have been used in the simulation model. It was found that with the existing diesel price of 0.368 $/l, the hybrid system will provide the lowest cost of energy with wind speed of more than 5.3 m/s, which is very close to the average wind speed in the Al Duqm area. As the wind speed increases, the cost of energy decreases even with the increase in the fuel cost. Therefore, incorporating wind turbines with the existing power station will result in about the same net present cost and cost of energy as for the diesel-only system.

Study and design of hybrid diesel–wind standalone system for remote area in Oman

Summary Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are cost effective and desirable gateways to mobile computing. They allow computers to be mobile, cable less and communicate with speeds close to the speeds of wired LANs. These features came with expensive price to pay in areas of security of the network. This paper identifies and summarizes these security concerns and their solutions. Broadly, security concerns in the WLAN world are classified into physical and logical. The paper overviews both physical and logical WLANs security problems followed by a review of the main technologies used to overcome them. It addresses logical security attacks like manin-the-middle attack and Denial of Service attacks as well as physical security attacks like rouge APs. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) was the first logical solution to secure WLANs. Hiwever, WEP suffered many problems which were partially solved by IEEE802.1x protocol. Towards perfection in securing WLANs, IEEE802.11i emerged as a new MAC layer standard which permanently fixes most of the security problems found in WEP and other temporary WLANs security solutions. This paper reviews all security solutions starting from WEP to IEEE802.11i and discusses the strength and weakness of these solutions.
