Teaching for quality learning at university

Rapid advances in industrial information integration methods have spurred tremendous growth in the use of enterprise systems. Consequently, a variety of techniques have been used for probing enterprise systems. These techniques include business process management, workflow management, Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), grid computing, and others. Many applications require a combination of these techniques, which is giving rise to the emergence of enterprise systems. Development of the techniques has originated from different disciplines and has the potential to significantly improve the performance of enterprise systems. However, the lack of powerful tools still poses a major hindrance to exploiting the full potential of enterprise systems. In particular, formal methods and systems methods are crucial for modeling complex enterprise systems, which poses unique challenges. In this paper, we briefly survey the state of the art in the area of enterprise systems as they relate to industrial informatics.

Enterprise Systems: State-of-the-Art and Future Trends

Though research on the Semantic Web has progressed at a steady pace, its promise has yet to be realized. One major difficulty is that, by its very nature, the Semantic Web is a large, uncensored system to which anyone may contribute. This raises the question of how much credence to give each source. We cannot expect each user to know the trustworthiness of each source, nor would we want to assign top-down or global credibility values due to the subjective nature of trust. We tackle this problem by employing a web of trust, in which each user maintains trusts in a small number of other users. We then compose these trusts into trust values for all other users. The result of our computation is not an agglomerate "trustworthiness" of each user. Instead, each user receives a personalized set of trusts, which may vary widely from person to person. We define properties for combination functions which merge such trusts, and define a class of functions for which merging may be done locally while maintaining these properties. We give examples of specific functions and apply them to data from Epinions and our BibServ bibliography server. Experiments confirm that the methods are robust to noise, and do not put unreasonable expectations on users. We hope that these methods will help move the Semantic Web closer to fulfilling its promise.

Distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs), such as online games, military simulations, collaborative design, etc., are very popular nowadays. To support large-scale DVEs, a multi-server architecture is usually employed, and the virtual world is partitioned into multiple zones for load distribution. The client assignment problem arises when assigning the participating clients to the servers. Current approaches usually assign clients to servers according to the locations of clients in the virtual world, i.e., clients interacting in the same zone of the virtual world will be assigned to the same server. This approach may degrade the interactivity of DVEs if the network delay from a client to its assigned server is large. In this paper, we formulate the client assignment problem, and propose two algorithms to assign clients to servers in a more efficient way. The proposed algorithms are based on the heuristics developed for the well-known Terminal Assignment problem. Simulation results with the BRITE Internet Topology Generator show that our algorithms are effective in enhancing the interactivity of DVEs.

Greedy Algorithms for Client Assignment in Large-Scale Distributed Virtual Environments

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) applications provide design and engineering professionals with various computer-based tools to perform design activities. As efficiency is one of the most important requirements in most design tasks, in this article, we contribute a novel collaborative design approach to improving efficiency, where a complex design task can be divided and executed concurrently by multiple collaborative designers. This approach is particularly effective for design tasks where Boolean operations - widely supported by most CAD applications - are heavily used in design activities, such as architecture design, mechanical design and digital media design. We have designed and implemented a prototype system CoAutoCAD to test the approach and to demonstrate a variety of collaborative design activities.

Shared Note-taking: A Smartphone-based Approach to Increased Student Engagement in Lectures

Prioritization And Selection (PAS) of requirements is an important concern of Agile software development. Existing PAS techniques are primarily binary selection of requirements and postponing lower-priority requirements to the future. As a result, lower-priority requirements may be constantly delayed until they never have a chance to be implemented at all. However, ignoring lower-priority requirements may threaten the quality of software. In this paper, we propose the concept of partial selection as an alternative to binary selection of Agile software requirements rather than ignoring them altogether or postponing them to the future releases. We further contribute a goal-oriented framework that allows requirements to be partially satisfied when tolerated. The framework specifies the fuzzy priority of requirements and accomplishes partial selection through relaxing the satisfaction level of requirements with respect to their priority in the release backlog of software. The experimental results show that partial selection of requirements will reduce the number of neglected requirements when compared to binary selection.

Partial Selection of Agile Software Requirements

It has been years since Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology was used to assist engineers, architects and other design professionals in their design activities. Collaboration has been increasingly needed in the CAD community and various CSCW technologies have thus been adopted to support the development of collaborative design systems. Existing collaborative CAD applications suffer from several problems such as not allowing concurrent work and poor local response. In this paper, we report our approaches to converting single-user CAD applications into collaborative ones, based on the Transparent Adaptation (TA) technique. The approach is able to significantly improve productivity of collaborative designers as well as provide a human-centered collaborative design environment. To prove the feasibility of our approach, we have successfully converted the single-user AutoCAD application into a collaborative one, named as CoAutoCAD. Key issues on the design of CoAutoCAD are reported in this paper.
