The research reports the results of the corrosion rate data of mild steel in H3PO4 acid as a function of temperature and inhibitor concentration. Potassium iodide was used as a corrosion inhibitor. The weight loss technique was used to evaluate the corrosion rate data. Mathematical and statistical analyses were used to interpret the results. Descriptive statistical analyses showed the distribution of data deviate from normal distribution, which means that most of corrosion rate data were distributed at higher level of inhibitor concentration and lower level of temperature and this preferable case in pickling process. Three mathematical models were suggested to represent the data with high correlation coefficients.

Statistical Investigation as a Tool for Corrosion Data Explanations and Forecasting of Reliable Operating Regions

In the present study, a mass transfer based theoretical model to investigate the rate of corrosion of an alloy of mild steel in a solution of a carbon oxide-wastewater from oilfield with and without acetic acid is presented. Electrochemical polarization data are evaluated using β – model which takes into account the influence of mass transfer on the corrosion process. An algorithm is built, and two software programs are used in evaluating the corrosion kinetics parameters. The effect of correction factor of mass transfer, which depends on β, on the kinetic reaction parameters is evaluated.The average value of β is 0.42 suggesting a mixed control corrosion mechanism. A mass transfer correction factor (λ) is evaluated at different temperatures and speeds of rotation in the absence and presence of the protective film. The values of λ ≈1 at low overpotential and it decrease as over potential increases. The polarization resistance values in the absence of acetic acid are larger (≈0.5 Ω. cm2) than the polarization resistance values in the presence of acetic acid (≈0.1 Ω. cm2), due to the formation of the protective film. The results are further analyzed by dimensionless groups and empirical equations are obtained with high correlation coefficients.

The Effect of Mass Transfer on Corrosion in Oilfield Production Processes by Wastewater Enriched with CO2: Computer-Aided Modeling and Experimental Verification

In the previous experimental work, the granular activated carbon (GAC) had shown a capability to adsorb glucose from it aqueous solution prior the regeneration step (RO or NF membrane) in a Manipulated Osmosis Desalination system (MOD) when using the glucose as an osmotic agent. In this paper, the kinetics adsorption of glucose onto commercial granular activated carbon (mesh, 12-20) is described. The glucose adsorption rate ( qt) onto GAC within an 8 hr contact time using three different GAC samples doses ( 5,10 and 30 g/l) at different shaking speed values ( 45,100,145 rpm) is investigated. The adsorption kinetic models: pseud first order, pseud second order, intra-particle diffusion and mass transfer models are used for analyzing glucose sorption by GAC. The finding indicates that glucose sorption onto GAC is well represented by the Pseud second order kinetic model.

Kinetic Adsorption Study of Glucose Osmotic Agent onto Granular Activated Carbon in SET Technique

The evaporation of a single n-pentane drop in another warm flowing liquid (water) medium has been studied experimentally. A Perspex column with an internal diameter of 10 cm and height of 150 cm was used throughout the experiments. N-pentane liquid at its saturation temperature and warm flowing water with flow rate of 10, 20, 30 and 40 L/h were employed as the dispersed and continuous phases, respectively. The active height of the continuous phase in the column (i.e. the level of the continuous phase in the column) covered only 100 cm of the column’s height. A Photron FASTCAM high-speed camera (~ 65,000 f/s) was used to film the evaporation of the drop, while AutoCAD was used to analyse the images from the camera. The diameter ratio (diameter of growing two-phase bubble to initial drop diameter) of the two-phase bubble formed because of the evaporation of the pentane drop in direct contact with the water was measured. Also, the vaporisation ratio (x), the open angle of vapour (β), the total height for complete evaporation and the total evaporation time were measured. The effects of the continuous phase flow rate and the temperature difference between the contacting phases, in terms of Jakob number (Ja), on the measured parameters were investigated. Furthermore, a statistical model to fit the experimental data was developed. The experimental results showed that the diameter of the two-phase bubble is strongly influenced by varying the continuous phase flow rate. The final size of the evaporated vapour bubble was unaffected by the flow rate of the continuous phase, while both the total height required for complete evaporation and hence the time required was significantly influenced. A similar impact was observed for the vaporisation ratio and the open angle of vapour.
