In this paper, a novel swarm-based metaheuristic algorithm is proposed, which is called tuna swarm optimization (TSO). The main inspiration for TSO is based on the cooperative foraging behavior of tuna swarm. The work mimics two foraging behaviors of tuna swarm, including spiral foraging and parabolic foraging, for developing an effective metaheuristic algorithm. The performance of TSO is evaluated by comparison with other metaheuristics on a set of benchmark functions and several real engineering problems. Sensitivity, scalability, robustness, and convergence analyses were used and combined with the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Friedman test. The simulation results show that TSO performs better compared to other comparative algorithms.

Directed particle swarm optimization with Gaussian-process-based function forecasting

Clustering is an important data analysis technique, which has been applied to many practical scenarios. However, many partitioning based clustering algorithms are sensitive to the initial state of cluster centroids, may get trapped in a local optimum, and have poor robustness. In recent years, particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been regarded as an effective solution to the problem. However, it has the possibility of converging to a local optimum, especially when solving complex problems. In this paper, we propose a hybrid PSO-K-means algorithm, which uses the Gaussian estimation of distribution method (GEDM) to assist PSO in updating the population information and adopts Levy flight to escape from the local optimum. The proposed algorithm is named a GEDM and Levy flight based PSO-K-means (GLPSOK) clustering algorithm. Firstly, during initialization, a few particles are initialized using the cluster centroids generated by K-means, while other particles are randomly initialized in the search space. Secondly, GEDM and PSO are selected with different probability to update the population information at different optimization stages. Thirdly, Levy flight is adopted to help the search escape from the local optimum. Finally, the greedy strategy is carried out to select the promising particles from the parents and the newly generated candidates. Experimental results on both synthetic data sets and real-world data sets show that the proposed algorithm can produce better clustering results and is more robust than existing classic or state-of-the-art clustering algorithms.

A Novel Hybrid PSO-K-Means Clustering Algorithm Using Gaussian Estimation of Distribution Method and Lévy Flight

Companies are constantly changing in their organization and the way they treat information. In this sense, relevant data analysis processes arise for decision makers. Similarly, to perform decision-making analyses, multi-criteria and metaheuristic methods represent a key tool for such analyses. These analysis methods solve symmetric and asymmetric problems with multiple criteria. In such a way, the symmetry transforms the decision space and reduces the search time. Therefore, the objective of this research is to provide a classification of the applications of multi-criteria and metaheuristic methods. Furthermore, due to the large number of existing methods, the article focuses on the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) and its different extensions. This work is novel since the review of the literature incorporates scientific articles, patents, and copyright registrations with applications of the PSO method. To mention some examples of the most relevant applications of the PSO method; route planning for autonomous vehicles, the optimal application of insulin for a type 1 diabetic patient, robotic harvesting of agricultural products, hybridization with multi-criteria methods, among others. Finally, the contribution of this article is to propose that the PSO method involves the following steps: (a) initialization, (b) update of the local optimal position, and (c) obtaining the best global optimal position. Therefore, this work contributes to researchers not only becoming familiar with the steps, but also being able to implement it quickly. These improvements open new horizons for future lines of research.

PSO, a Swarm Intelligence-Based Evolutionary Algorithm as a Decision-Making Strategy: A Review

The whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a new swarm intelligence (SI) optimization algorithm, which has the superiorities of fewer parameters and stronger searching ability. However, previous studies have indicated that there are shortages in maintaining diversity and avoiding local optimal solutions. This paper proposes a multi-strategy ensemble whale optimization algorithm (MSWOA) to alleviate these deficiencies. First, the chaotic initialization strategy is performed to enhance the quality of the initial population. Then, an improved random searching mechanism is designed to reduce blindness in the exploration phase and speed up the convergence. In addition, the original spiral updating position is modified by the Levy flight strategy, which leads to a better tradeoff between local and global search. Finally, an enhanced position revising mechanism is utilized to improve the exploration further. To testify the superiorities of the proposed MSWOA algorithm, a series of comparative experiments are carried out. On the one hand, the numerical optimization experimental results, which are conducted under nineteen widely used benchmark functions, indicate that the performance of MSWOA stands out compared with the standard WOA and six other well-designed SI algorithms. On the other hand, MSWOA is utilized to tune the parameters of the support vector machine (SVM), which is applied to the fault diagnosis of analog circuits. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method has higher diagnosis accuracy than other competitors. Therefore, the MSWOA is successfully applied as a novel and efficient optimization algorithm.

Multi-Strategy Ensemble Whale Optimization Algorithm and Its Application to Analog Circuits Intelligent Fault Diagnosis

To overcome the defect of whale optimization algorithm (WOA) being easily fallen into local optimum caused by the ill-distribution of solutions, this paper explores an adaptive WOA variant using Gaussian distribution strategies (GDSs), named GDS-WOA. In GDS-WOA, by means of one GDS, named the Gaussian estimation of distribution method, the superior population information is used to evolve the distribution scope and modify the evolution direction. Moreover, an adaptive framework is adopted to integrate the Gaussian estimation of distribution method and WOA together, in which each individual can update its position using Gaussian estimation of distribution method or WOA according to an adaptive probability parameter. When the algorithm falls into stagnation, another GDS, named Gaussian random walk, is activated to enrich the population diversity and help the algorithm get rid of the local optimum. Additionally, the greedy strategy is carried out to select the offspring from the parents and the generated candidates to fully retain the promising solutions. The GDS-WOA is benchmarked on CEC 2014 test suite, and the performance of GDS-WOA is evaluated by comparing with WOA and its promising variant IWOA, as well as other five state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms, i.e., COA, VCS, CoBiDE, HFPSO and GWO. The statistical results demonstrate that GDS-WOA outperforms other competitors in terms of convergence efficiency and accuracy. Finally, GDS-WOA is applied to solve the optimal task allocation problem of heterogeneous unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). To address this constrained real-world optimizing problem efficiently, the mathematical model of heterogeneous UCAVs task allocation is described with the operational effectiveness value as the objective. The validity and practicauility of the model as well as the performance of GDS-WOA for solving constrained optimization problem are demonstrated by the experimental results.
