Within the field of polymer research, the investigation of crystalline polymers has proved to be useful from both a practical and a more fundamental point of view. Concerning the practical point, crystallinity strongly influences such mechanical properties of polymers as density, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and impact resistance. Concerning the more fundamental viewpoint, crystallinity and in particular the crystallization process seem to be not totally understood, and these topics have therefore been the subject of many theoretical considerations and speculations.

Crystalline Atactic Polymers

Crystallinity in Free Radical Polymerized Polyvinyl p-t-butylbenzoate)

An isotactic and an atactic polymethylmethacrylate have been investigated by light scattering measurements at 25°C in acetone/benzene mixtures in order to see the effects of the difference in the microstructures between the two stereoisomers on the preferential solvation and some other molecular parameters of the polymers. The extreme differences due to the structural effects between the stereoregular and the stereoirregular polymers appear in the mixed solvents with higher content of acetone.



Ataktisches und isotaktisches Polymethylmethacrylat wurden bei 25°C in Aceton/Benzol-Mischungen mittels Lichtstreuungsmessungen zur Bestimmung der Effekte, die die Unterschiede in der Mikrostruktur der beiden Stereoisomeren auf die Vorzugssolvatation und auf einige andere Molekulparameter der Polymeren ausuben, untersucht. Der groste Unterschied zwischen den stereoregularen und stereoirregularen Polymeren bezuglich der strukturellen Effekte trat in Losungsmittelmischungen auf, die einen hoheren Gehalt an Aceton aufwiesen.
