Journal ArticleDOI
Slowing the Deterioration of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Observed during Bronchodilator Therapy by Adding Inhaled Corticosteroids: A 4-Year Prospective Study
E. Dompeling,Constant P. van Schayck,Petrus M. van Grunsven,Cees L. A. van Herwaarden,Reinier Akkermans,Johan Molema,Hans Th.M. Folgering,Chris van Weel +7 more
TL;DR: It is unclear whether an unfavorable course of asthma or COPD during bronchodilator therapy alone can be reversed or decelerated by additional anti-inflammatory therapy with inhaled corticosteroids.
Journal ArticleDOI
Validity of spirometric testing in a general practice population of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Tjard Schermer,J.E. Jacobs,Niels H. Chavannes,Joliet Hartman,Hans Th.M. Folgering,Ben Bottema,C. van Weel +6 more
TL;DR: Relevant spirometric indices measured by trained general practice staff were marginally but statistically significantly higher than those measured in pulmonary function laboratories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cessation of Long-term Treatment with Inhaled Corticosteroid (Budesonide) in Children with Asthma Results in Deterioration
H. J. Waalkens,Ee Vanessenzandvliet,Hughes,Jorrit Gerritsen,E. J. Duiverman,K. Knol,K. F. Kerrebijn,P. H. Quanjer,Hj Sluiter,Em Pouw,Dfme Schoonbrood,C.M. Roos,Hm Jansen,Paulus Brand,Huib A. M. Folgering,Cla Vanherwaarden,Se Overbeek,Jm Bogaard,C Hilvering,Sj Gans,Hjj Mengelers,B Vanderbruggen,J Kreukniet,Eem Vanesenzandvliet,Jm Kouwenberg,Je Prinsen,Jgr Demonchy,Aa Kaptein,Fw Dekker,Pjfm Merkus,Sj Pocock,Nj Robinson,ER Bleecker,DA Meyers +42 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that in this study long-term treatment with 600 micrograms budesonide daily suppressed underlying mechanisms of asthma, but did not cure the disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Xanthine oxidase is involved in exercise-induced oxidative stress in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Leo M. A. Heunks,Jose Viña,Cees L. A. van Herwaarden,Hans Th.M. Folgering,Amparo Gimeno,P. N. Richard Dekhuijzen +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that strenuous exercise in COPD patients results in blood glutathione oxidation and lipid peroxidation, which can be inhibited by treatment with allopurinol, indicating that XO is an important source for free radical generation during exercise during COPD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Target-flow inspiratory muscle training during pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD.
TL;DR: It is believed that additional TF-IMT during PR in a selected group of patients with COPD who have ventilatory limitation has an extra beneficial effect on the performance of the inspiratory muscles and on exercise performance.
