Recent Developments of Carbon Dots in Biosensing: A Review.

One-dimensional wires are the most common building blocks in metamaterials. In this study, zero-dimensional nanoparticles connected by tunneling networks were used to construct metamaterials, thus providing a more flexible alternative for designing the geometrical configuration of metamaterials, particularly in nanodevices. The composites with nickel nanoparticles@MnO were prepared by a bio-gel derived strategy. Nickel nanoparticles were not connected geometrically, but the conductive network had been already formed, which was a tunneling-dominated percolative phenomenon demonstrated by the first-principles calculation. Negative permittivity was achieved in the composites, as the low-frequency plasmonic state could be generated in the tunneling nickel-networks. At the same time, negative susceptibility was observed due to the diamagnetism of the tunneling current loops. Electromagnetic simulations indicate that the composites have the potential for electromagnetic shielding (only 0.25 mm in thickness). It is believed that this study not only fills up the research gap in the influence of the tunneling effect on negative electromagnetic parameters but also opens up another way of preparing metamaterials by using zero-dimensional nanoparticles instead of one-dimensional wires.

Multifunctions of Polymer Nanocomposites: Environmental Remediation, Electromagnetic Interference Shielding, And Sensing Applications

Sodium-ion capacitors (SICs), designed to attain high energy density, rapid energy delivery, and long lifespan, have attracted much attention because of their comparable performance to lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), alongside abundant sodium resources. Conventional SIC design is based on battery-like anodes and capacitive cathodes, in which the battery-like anode materials involve various reactions, such as insertion, alloying, and conversion reactions, and the capacitive cathode materials usually depend on activated carbon (AC). However, researchers have attempted to construct SICs based on battery-like cathodes and capacitive anodes or a combination of both in recent years. In this Minireview, charge storage mechanisms and material design strategies for SICs are summarized, with a focus on the battery-like anode materials from both inorganic and organic sources. Additionally, the challenges in the fabrication of SICs and future research directions are discussed.

Binary nanoparticle superlattices (BNSLs), which are studied for developing multicomponent materials and multifunctional nanodevices, are distinguished by their outstanding synergetic properties. Owing to complex factors that might influence the formation of BNSLs, it is necessary to comprehensively explore the self-assembly of nanocrystals. A variety of BNSL structural configurations, such as NaZn13, Cu3Au, NaCl, AlB2, CaCu5-type structures, were obtained by cocrystallizing Au–Ni and Ag–Ni nanocrystals of different sizes. Specifically, at a similar effective size ratio, the supercrystal structures formed by the Au–Ni and Ag–Ni systems coated with different organic ligands are not essentially the same. We attribute this diversity to the different softness of effective entities and facet-dependent interdigitation between the ligands tethered on the nanoparticle surface. Inherent crystallinity directed formation of the final BNSL structures is likely driven by anisotropic or isotropic cocrystallization. The synergistic effect of the coating agent and crystallinity directed assembly process is reasonably believed to be the important factor affecting the growth of BNSLs, which provides a new idea for the study of kinetics during the self-assembly of supercrystals.
