A critical review of aerobic denitrification: Insights into the intracellular electron transfer.

In the present study, ceria, pristine perovskites LaMO3 (Cu, Fe) and novel ceria-perovskite composites CeO2-LaMO3 were successfully prepared and applied as heterogeneous Fenton like- catalysts for the degradation and mineralization of a new emergent compound- bisphenol F (BPF) in aqueous solution. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectrometer (XRD), BET surface area determination, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Catalytic bisphenol F behavior shows that the activity of pristine perovskites was improved due to the introduction of cerium. Catalytic activity in terms of TOC removal followed the order of CeO2-LaCuO3 > CeO2-LaFeO3 > LaCuO3 > LaFeO3 > CeO2 with about 83, 79, 68, 64 and 28% respectively. Only the novel composite oxide CeO2-LaCuO3 was found to be effective for Bisphenol F degradation at neutral conditions. EPR analyses and scavenging experiments revealed that BPF was mainly decomposed by the attack of OH, especially the surface-bounded OH. BPF decay followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The absolute rate constant for BPF oxidation by OH was found to 2.09109 M−1 s−1, as determined by the competition kinetic method. Six stable organics intermediates were observed and five of them were identified p-benzoquinone, hydroquinone, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and Bis (4-hyroxyphenyl) methanol. Subsequent attack of these intermediates by OH radicals led to the formation of short chain acids: malonic, succinic, acetic, formic and oxalic acids. On the basis of the analytical results for the intermediate products and the assumption that hydroxyls radicals are the major reactive species, a plausible pathway of BPF mineralization during the heterogeneous Fenton process was proposed. Furthermore, the CeO2-LaCuO3 composite exhibited excellent long-term stability in the heterogeneous Fenton-like process. These results suggested that the novel ceria perovskite material would be a promising candidate for practical wastewater treatment.

Reactivity of novel Ceria–Perovskite composites CeO2- LaMO3 (MCu, Fe) in the catalytic wet peroxidative oxidation of the new emergent pollutant ‘Bisphenol F’: Characterization, kinetic and mechanism studies

As an alternative additive for bisphenol A, bisphenol F (BPF) also has very strong endocrine-disrupting effects. In the present study, N-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) supported on three supports (e.g., SiO2, ceria-zirconia solid solution/CeZrO2 and γ-Al2O3) were prepared, and catalytic peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation for BPF degradation was investigated. Catalyst characterization results showed that NCQDs were highly dispersed on the surface of both Al2O3 and CeZrO2 due to strong electrostatic attractive interactions between NCQDs and supports, while remarked agglomeration of NCQDs was identified on SiO2 surface because of repulsive interactions between NCQDs and SiO2 support. BACKGROUND: Traditional aerobic autotrophic nitrification and anoxic heterotrophic denitrification have many limitations. Recently, the simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic denitrification (HN‐AD) process has received increasing attention. Thus, the possibility of the simultaneous removal of bisphenols and NH₄ ⁺‐N via HN‐AD was investigated. RESULTS: A bisphenols‐degrading bacterial consortium was enriched and capable of degrading 50 mg L⁻¹ bisphenol A, 300 mg L⁻¹ 4,4‐dihydroxybenzophenone, 375 mg L⁻¹ bisphenol F (BPF) and 10 mg L⁻¹ bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfide under aerobic conditions. Further studies showed that the bacterial consortium could completely degrade 300 mg L⁻¹ BPF and remove NH₄ ⁺‐N at 35 °C with 150 rpm at the C/N ratio of over 10. Moreover, BPF mineralization and NH₄ ⁺‐N reduction to N₂ were observed. Clone library analysis indicated that Salmonella enterica, Enterobacter,Citrobacter and Pseudomonas could cooperate to degrade BPF and reduce NH₄ ⁺‐N to N₂. Among these species, the isolated Pseudomonas sp. HS‐2 was capable of simultaneous BPF degradation and NH₄ ⁺‐N removal via HN‐AD. CONCLUSION: The experimental results demonstrated that the enriched bacterial consortium and the isolated strain HS‐2 could simultaneously remove BPF and NH₄ ⁺‐N via HN‐AD, indicating that this is a potential way for the treatment of wastewaters containing these compounds. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Simultaneous bisphenol F degradation, heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification by a bacterial consortium

In recent years, under the condition of lack of carbon source, the presence of composite micro-pollutants make the removal of nitrate seriously damaged, and to find a suitable way to solve this problem is imminent. A fixed-biofilm carrier modified by mixing sponge iron (SI) and kapok fiber (KF) combined with strain Zoogloea sp. FY6 was constructed in this study to get a fixed-biofilm reactor with merit denitrification performance. By adjusting the operation parameters, it can be concluded that when the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was 1.5, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 6.0 h, and the pH was 6.0, the nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) of the fixed-biofilm reactor was up to 95.4% (2.95 mg L-1 h-1). In addition, the fixed-biofilm reactor constructed in this study can remove lead (Pb2+) and tetracycline (TC) excellently in the presence of SI and Zoogloea sp. FY6, and the denitrification performance can still maintain a high level under the influence of different concentrations of Pb2+ and TC. Furthermore, the addition of SI not only removes the compound pollutants, but also protects the toxicity of the pollutant inflow in the bioreactor, and the metabolic process of microorganisms in the bioreactor also removes some of the compound pollutants. The high-throughput data showed the abundance of strain Zoogloea sp. FY6 was still the highest value under the influence of various pollutants, and the metagenomic prediction showed that the fixed-biofilm reactor had perfect denitrification process and iron redox cycle benefits. This study provides a valuable reference for sustainable utilization of natural biological resources and reduction of material costs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
