The present study describes the costs for implementation of food safety systems in a small dairy plant located in the central region of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The steps involved in the implementation of a food safety system include a diagnosis of the prerequisites, implementation of the good manufacturing practices, standard sanitation operating procedures (SSOPs), training of the food handlers and hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP). After implementation of the food safety system, the total cost of implementing the food safety system was US$ 61,812.00, signifying an impact of US$ 3.81/t of yogurt packed (0.5% of the production costs). The resources used for investment signified an additional US$ 12.92/t (1.5% of the cost per kg of yogurt packed). Multicriteria decision-making tools are widely used in complex decision-making problems. There are also numerous points of decision-making in transportation. One of these decision-making points regards clean technology vehicle determination. Clean technology vehicles, such as electric buses, have some advantages compared to other technologies like internal combustion engine vehicles. Notably, electric vehicles emit zero tailpipe emissions, thereby ensuring cleaner air for cities and making these clean technologies preferable to other technologies, especially in highly populated areas for better air quality and more livable cities. In this study, we propose a multicriteria decision-making process using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) in the context of an electric bus in the center of Ankara. Six potential electric bus alternatives were evaluated under seven specific criteria. Overall, EV-2 electric buses outperformed other electric bus alternatives based on the chosen criteria. In addition, the stability of the results obtained under different scenarios using this method was established via sensitivity analysis.

Structural modeling of the relationship among food safety knowledge, attitude and behavior of hotel staff in Turkey

The European Union (EU) 2020 Strategy aims at forming the conditions for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth targets. Assessment of the EU countries’ situation is of vital importance in attaining the EU 2020 Strategy. This paper presents an impartial evaluation of the performance of 27 EU member countries in terms of each EU 2020 Strategy. For the basis of the evaluation, we propose an effective and easily practicable measure for ranking and monitoring the countries according to their performance by using the VIKOR and the TOPSIS methods, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, which allows for the integration of the 22 indicators, and be capable of considering such a broad spectrum of criteria including various economic, financial, demographic, educational and innovational. Our study provides a comparative analysis of the above-two methods. The contribution of the study to the literature is that these methods can be applied for assessing countries in terms of the EU 2020 Strategy which have the multi–dimensionality targets. The results point out new EU member countries such as Slovenia and Romania have attained higher scores than many of the 15 EU countries.

Assessing Euro 2020 Strategy Using Multi-criteria Decision Making Methods: VIKOR and TOPSIS

Firms in emerging markets could show a tendency to have high liquidity positions by ignoring the liquidity-profitability tradeoff in terms of working capital management due to gained experiences from stressed times. Accordingly, this study empirically examines the validity of liquidity-profitability tradeoff in Turkish market via structural equation modeling. The functions of liquidity and profitability as latent variables of the model are constituted from Piotroski’s criterias of liquidity/solvency, operating efficiency and profitability. The hypothesized model for the inexistence of the validity of liquidity-profitability tradeoff was verified and there is a moderate level of positive effect between liquidity and profitability in Turkey. The findings indicate that (1) current ratio or its variants as single-handed variables are inadequate to explain liquidity- profitability relation and (2) leverage seems to be the most important indicator as taken into account on working capital management decisions. Turkish firms apply prudent working capital management to overcome possible liquidity shocks.

Dunya genelinde yasanan ekonomik istikrarsizliktan en az sekilde etkilenebilmek adina yatirimcilarin en dogru pazari secmeleri gerekmektedir. Bu noktada yatirim yapacak olan birey, isletme ya da ulke, yatirim yapmayi dusundugu ulkelerin risk durumlarini dogru bir sekilde degerlendirmelidir. Dunya genelinde bu isi ustlenen bircok kredi derecelendirme kurulusu bulunmaktadir. Ancak bu kuruluslar, derecelendirme kriterlerini gizli tutmalari ve siyasi baski altinda kaldiklari yonundeki dusunceler ile zaman zaman elestirilerin odaginda kalmaktadir. Bu calismada, ulkelerin siralanmasinda Oran Yaklasimi, Referans Noktasi Yaklasimi ve Tam Carpimsal Yaklasim olmak uzere uc alt yaklasimi temel alan Multimoora yontemi kullanilmistir. Cok amacli karar verme yontemi olan Multimoora boyutsuz olcege dayanmaktadir. Calismada 76 ulkenin 2012 yilina ait 22 makroekonomik ve politik risk gostergesi butuncul olarak degerlendirilmis ve ulkelere iliskin risk siralamasi elde edilmistir. Objektif olarak elde edilen bu siralamaya gore Luksemburg, Singapur ve Norvec ilk ucte yer alirken 56. sirada yer alan Turkiye’nin ekonomik gostergelerinin basarili olmasina ragmen gerilerde yer almasinin politik risk degiskenlerinden aldigi dusuk notlardan kaynaklandigi soylenebilir. Bu notlarin siyasi olmadigi varsayimi altinda “Politik Istikrar ve Siddet / Terorizm Olmamasi” ve “Konusma Yetkisi ve Denetlenebilme” degiskenlerine iliskin puanlarin iyilestirilmesi Turkiye’nin daha yuksek siralarda yer almasini saglayacaktir.

Cok kriterli karar verme yontemleri, birden fazla kriterin optimize edilerek karar vericinin en iyi alternatifi secmesine imkân veren metodolojik bir aractir. Analitik Ag Sureci (Analytic Network Process - ANP) de oldukca fazla kullanilan cok kriterli karar verme yontemlerinden biridir. ANP, kriterler ve alternatifler arasindaki karmasik bagimlilik iliskilerine izin veren ve geri bildirim sonuclarini iceren bir yaklasimdir. Calismada, gunumuzde ozellikle gencler arasinda yayginlasan, insan sagligini ve toplum huzurunu tehdit eden madde bagimliligi sorununda, erken uyari analizi yapmaya imkân veren ANP uygulamasi ele alinmistir. Bu kapsamda genclerde madde kullaniminin yayginliginin, madde kullanmayi etkileyen faktorlerin ve risk alanlarinin tespiti amaclanmistir. Genclerde bagimlilik konusunda hazirlanan ve Kecioren ilcesinde egitimini surdurmekte olan 2500 ogrenciye uygulanan anket sonuclari, yontemdeki veri setini olusturarak modellenmis ve madde bagimliligi konusunda risk tasiyan ve destek verilmesi gereken cocuklarin yogunluklu olarak bulunduklari okullar tespit edilmeye calisilmistir.
