The kinetics of non-isothermal crystallization of high density polyethylene/nano-scale silicon dioxide (HDPE/nano-SiO2) composite was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry at various cooling rates. Several theoretical models were applied to describe the process of non-isothermal crystallization. The results showed that the Avrami analysis modified by Jeziorny or by Mo's treatment could describe the non-isothermal crystallization of the composite very well, but the Ozawa analysis did not give an adequate description. The Avrami exponent n of HDPE/nano-SiO2 composite is slightly larger than that of HDPE. The values of half-time t
1/2 and Z
c showed that the crystallization rate increased with increasing cooling rates for both HDPE and HDPE/nano-SiO2 composite, but the crystallization rate of HDPE/nano-SiO2 composite was faster than that of HDPE. The activation energies were estimated to be 166.3, 206.2, 251.1 and 266.0 kJ/mol for non-isothermal crystallization of pure HDPE and HDPE/nano-SiO2 composites with different SiO2 loadings of 1%, 3%, and 5% respectively.

Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers with different generations (0–5) were investigated as curing agents in epoxy resin systems. Flory's gelation theory and the Avrami equation were used to predict the cure behavior of epoxy resin/PAMAM/imidazole at various temperatures and PAMAM concentrations. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results obtained from the dynamic torsional vibration method. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry

Behavior of polyamidoamine dendrimers as curing agents in bis‐phenol A epoxy resin systems

Cure behavior of epoxy resin/montmorillonite/imidazole nanocomposite by dynamic torsional vibration method

Epoxy resin copolymer with zero shrinkage can be obtained by copolymerizing epoxy resin E51 with the expanding monomer of 3,9-di(5-norbornene-2,2)-1,5,7,11 -tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane (NSOC). The volume changes of an epoxy resin copolymerized with various amounts of NSOC during cure was measured with a dilatometer. The epoxy copolymer giving zero shrinkage was an epoxy resin with a E51:NSOC ratio equivalent to 5.88∶1. This epoxy resin copolymer with zero shrinkage has been used as an adhesive to join the optical parts of a large optical telescope.
