Citizen Science: A Study of People, Expertise and Sustainable Development

MC 281 is the second in the required sophomore sequence for Social Relations and Policy. In this course, we will explore the interactions and experiences between and among various groups in American history. We will consider how Americans both defended and contested prevailing definitions of fitness for citizenship and inclusion in the political process and American life, and how groups sought to gain access to social and political equality. This course focuses on the history of relationships within and between different groups in the United States, and explores the complexities of those relations. Rarely centered solely on race or ethnicity, such interactions were also affected by gender, sexuality, religion, nation, and class. We will also explore the shifting definitions of race and ethnicity. Students will analyze not only the experiences of the different groups, but also the connections between them to assess the larger dynamics and their implications for public policy.

Dieser Orientierung an der Erwachsenenwelt entspricht mindestens zweierlei: zum einen, dass sich uber Erziehung eine existierende Gesellschaft zu reproduzieren sucht, sie sucht „in ihre Produktionsweisen und das System ihres Verkehrs einzufuhren, ihre Werte zu vermitteln“ (a.a.O.S. 63); zum anderen werden so historisch wechselnde, der gesellschaftlich-generationalen Ordnung(svorstellung) korrespondierende Blicke auf das Kind, d.h. Kindheitsbilder, produziert. Entsprechen jene Erziehungsoptionen im Kontext der Durchsetzung der burgerlich-kapitalistischen Gesellschaftsformation, der „Okonomisierung der Lebensverhaltnisse“ (Glantschnig 1987: S. 13; vgl. Muschg 1977, Kap. 3; Kaiser 1981, S. 270–393), der Vorstellung von sozialer Brauchbarkeit als oberstem Bildungsziel des Kindes, das so „zum Rad im herrschenden Getriebe, zum brauchbaren Glied in der Kette der modernen Guterproduktion“ (Glantschnig 1987, S. 12) wird, so ergeben sich aus Blicken und Bildern — bei Dominanz dessen, was sich „Sozialisationscharakter der Erziehung, der sie unter das Gebot eines herrschenden Interesses stellt“ (Heydorn 1980, S. 64), nennen lasst — Einsichten in die generationale Ordnung, die historisch zunachst in der angesprochenen Epoche mit der Unterordnung unter „Die Vernunft der Vater“ (Wild 1987; vgl. Richter 1987) ihren Ausgang nimmt — daher kann Mason (1994) ihren Beitrag zu Kindheitsgeschichte und Generationenverhaltnis auch gegenstandsangemessen mit dem Titel „From father’s property to children’s rights“ uberschreiben.
