Seasonal variation in marine C:N:P stoichiometry: can the composition of seston explain stable Redfield ratios?
Helene Frigstad,Helene Frigstad,Tom Andersen,Dag O. Hessen,Lars-Johan Naustvoll,Torbjørn Martin Johnsen,Richard G. J. Bellerby,Richard G. J. Bellerby +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a generalized linear model was used to differentiate between the live autotrophic and non-autotrophic sestonic fractions, and for both stations the nonautotrophs dominated with respective annual means of 76 and 55%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term trends in carbon, nutrients and stoichiometry in Norwegian coastal waters: Evidence of a regime shift
Helene Frigstad,Helene Frigstad,Tom Andersen,Dag O. Hessen,Emil Jeansson,Morten D. Skogen,Lars-Johan Naustvoll,Martin W. Miles,Truls Johannessen,Truls Johannessen,Richard G. J. Bellerby +10 more
TL;DR: A 20-year time series from the Norwegian Coastal Current was explored to examine the effects of advected nutrient supply from the southern North Sea and of large-scale climate variability on hydrography, nutrients and particulate organic matter (seston), focusing on trends in the January to April period in the upper layers as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reevaluating the Role of Organic Matter Sources for Coastal Eutrophication, Oligotrophication, and Ecosystem Health
TL;DR: In this article, the role of ter-OM for coastal eutrophication and oligotrophication processes and ecosystem health is discussed. And the authors conclude that it is essential to include and target all organic matter sources (i.e., also ter-om) in monitoring programs to better understand the consequences of both eutrophic and oligotic processes on coastal ecosystems, and provide an outlook and recommendations for the future management of coastal zones given changes in terOM input.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variation in the seston C:N ratio of the Arctic Ocean and pan-Arctic shelves
Helene Frigstad,Helene Frigstad,Tom Andersen,Richard G. J. Bellerby,Richard G. J. Bellerby,Anna Silyakova,Dag O. Hessen +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the applicability of the classic Redfield C:N ratio (6.6) and the recently proposed Sterner ratio (8.3) for the Arctic Ocean and pan-Arctic shelves was evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of Riverine Input on Norwegian Coastal Systems
Helene Frigstad,Helene Frigstad,Øyvind Kaste,Øyvind Kaste,Anne Deininger,Anne Deininger,Karsten Kvalsund,Guttorm Christensen,Richard G. J. Bellerby,Richard G. J. Bellerby,Kai Sørensen,Marit Norli,Andrew L. King +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present physical, chemical, and biological observations over two consecutive years from three study regions along the Norwegian coast that represent a broad latitudinal gradient in catchment and oceanographic conditions.
