The geographic distribution of fluoride in surface and groundwater in Ethiopia with an emphasis on the Rift Valley.
Redda Tekle-Haimanot,Zenebe Melaku,Helmut Kloos,Clemens Reimann,Wondwossen Fantaye,Legesse Zerihun,Kjell Bjorvatn +6 more
TL;DR: Of the various flourosis prevention methods tried in Ethiopia, the treatment of surface water has been shown to be the most feasible and effective for towns and large commercial farms in the Rift Valley, although defluoridation methods should be considered for smaller rural communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
The COVID-19 pandemic: diverse contexts; different epidemics-how and why?
Wim Van Damme,Ritwik Dahake,Alexandre Delamou,Brecht Ingelbeen,Edwin Wouters,Guido Vanham,Remco van de Pas,Jean-Paul Dossou,Por Ir,Seye Abimbola,Stefaan Van der Borght,Devadasan Narayanan,Gerald Bloom,Ian Van Engelgem,Mohamed Ali Ag Ahmed,Joël Arthur Kiendrébéogo,Kristien Verdonck,Vincent De Brouwere,Kéfilath Bello,Helmut Kloos,Peter Aaby,Andreas Kalk,Sameh Al-Awlaqi,N S Prashanth,Jean Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum,Placide Mbala,Steve Ahuka-Mundeke,Yibeltal Assefa +27 more
TL;DR: This paper tries to make sense of this variability in the variety of ways the COVID-19 epidemic is unfolding across the globe by exploring the important role that context plays in these different CO VID-19 epidemics; by comparing COVID's epidemics with other respiratory diseases, including other coronaviruses that circulate continuously; and by highlighting the critical unknowns and uncertainties that remain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative study of diatoms and macroinvertebrates as indicators of severe water pollution: Case study of the Kebena and Akaki rivers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Abebe Beyene,Abebe Beyene,Taffere Addis,Taffere Addis,Demeke Kifle,Worku Legesse,Helmut Kloos,Ludwig Triest +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the relative performance of diatoms and macroinvertebrates to measure municipal and industrial impacts on the ecological integrity of the three major rivers flowing through Addis Ababa was assessed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria and water resource development: the case of Gilgel-Gibe hydroelectric dam in Ethiopia
Delenasaw Yewhalaw,Worku Legesse,Wim Van Bortel,Solomon Gebre-Selassie,Helmut Kloos,Luc Duchateau,Niko Speybroeck,Niko Speybroeck +7 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that children living in close proximity to a man-made reservoir in Ethiopia are at higher risk of malaria compared to those living farther away, and it is recommended that sound prevention and control programme be designed and implemented around the reservoir to reduce the prevalence of malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution of fluoride and fluorosis in Ethiopia and prospects for control.
TL;DR: Analysis of hydrochemical, economic and demographic factors in the spatial distribution of high‐fluoride domestic water sources indicates that the fluorosis problem has become more serious in the Rift Valley in recent decades.
