Good control of the morphology, particle size, uniformity and dispersity of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) is of increasing importance to their use in catalyst, adsorption, polymer filler, optical devices, bio-imaging, drug delivery, and biomedical applications. This review discusses different synthesis methodologies to prepare well-dispersed MSNs and hollow silica nanoparticles (HSNs) with tunable dimensions ranging from a few to hundreds of nanometers of different mesostructures. The methods include fast self-assembly, soft and hard templating, a modified Stober method, dissolving–reconstruction and modified aerogel approaches. In practical applications, the MSNs prepared by these methods demonstrate good potential for use in high-performance catalysis, antireflection coating, transparent polymer–MSNs nanocomposites, drug-release and theranostic systems.

Soft Synthesis of Single‐Crystal Silicon Monolayer Sheets

Anion Distributions and Phase Transitions in CuS1-xSex(x = 0-1) Studied by Raman Spectroscopy

Single crystal growth of the superconductor Bi2.0(Bi0.2Sr1.8Ca1.0)Cu2.0O8

The diffusion coefficient of ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ ions (${D}_{\mathrm{Li}}$) in the battery material ${\mathrm{Li}}_{x}{\mathrm{CoO}}_{2}$ has been investigated by muon-spin relaxation (${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}\mathrm{SR}$). Based on experiments in zero and weak longitudinal fields at temperatures up to 400 K, we determined the fluctuation rate ($\ensuremath{\nu}$) of the fields on the muons due to their interaction with the nuclear moments. Combined with susceptibility data and electrostatic potential calculations, clear ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ ion diffusion was detected above $\ensuremath{\sim}150\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$. The ${D}_{\mathrm{Li}}$ estimated from $\ensuremath{\nu}$ was in very good agreement with predictions from first-principles calculations, and we present the ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}\mathrm{SR}$ technique as an optimal probe to detect ${D}_{\mathrm{Li}}$ for materials containing magnetic ions.

Li Diffusion in Li x CoO 2 Probed by Muon-Spin Spectroscopy

A formation mechanism for monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres was investigated from the viewpoint of both particle growth and the progress of the condensation of the silica precursor. The particle growth of monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres was studied by TEM observation. The development of the mesopores was examined by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements. The condensation reaction of the silica precursor was analyzed by silicic acid titration and pH−conductivity measurements during the synthesis. It was found that small particles emerged suddenly after the commencement of the synthesis, and then the residual silica precursors reacted preferentially with the surface silanols on these existing particles. This led to the formation of monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres. Conversely, new small particles emerge throughout the synthesis in the case of a heterogeneous system.
