Journal ArticleDOI
Commensal microflora-induced T cell responses mediate progressive neurodegeneration in glaucoma.
Huihui Chen,Kin-Sang Cho,Kin-Sang Cho,T. H. Khanh Vu,T. H. Khanh Vu,T. H. Khanh Vu,Ching-Hung Shen,Mandeep Kaur,Guochun Chen,Guochun Chen,Guochun Chen,Rose Mathew,M. Woolf,Clifford J. Woolf,Mark T. Whary,Martine J. Jager,James G. Fox,Jianzhu Chen,Dong Feng Chen,Dong Feng Chen +35 more
TL;DR: It is shown that elevation of intraocular pressure induces T cell infiltration in the eyes and that T cell cross-reactivity between endogenous and commensal antigens contributes to disease onset in mice, providing compelling evidence that glaucomatous neurodegeneration is mediated in part by T cells that are pre-sensitized by exposure to commensals microflora.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early retinal neurovascular impairment in patients with diabetes without clinically detectable retinopathy.
Yunkao Zeng,Dan Cao,Honghua Yu,Dawei Yang,Dawei Yang,Xuenan Zhuang,Xuenan Zhuang,Yunyan Hu,Juan Li,Jing Yang,Qiaowei Wu,Qiaowei Wu,Baoyi Liu,Baoyi Liu,Liang Zhang +14 more
TL;DR: Functional and structural impairments have already started in diabetic retina even in the absence of visible retinal lesions, and Subtle microvascular abnormalities rather than ganglion cell loss might be associated with early functional changes in NDR patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Levels of Inflammatory Cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-17A, and TNF-α in Aqueous Humour of Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy
Songfu Feng,Honghua Yu,Ying Yu,Yu Geng,Dongli Li,Chun Yang,Qingjun Lv,Li Lu,Ting Liu,Guodong Li,Ling Yuan +10 more
TL;DR: The levels of inflammatory cytokine levels were increased in DR patients and might have a synergistic effect on the pathogenesis of this disease, and they were elevated along with the progression of neovascularization, reflecting the severity of DR.

Jager,James G. Fox,Jianzhu Chen,Dong Feng Chen +22 more
TL;DR: The authors showed that T-cell infiltration into the retina leads to a prolonged phase of retinal ganglion cell degeneration that persists after IOP returns to a normal level, indicating that glaucomatous neurodegeneration is mediated in part by T cells that are pre-sensitized by exposure to commensal microflora.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optic nerve head perfusion changes preceding peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thinning in preclinical diabetic retinopathy
Dan Cao,Dawei Yang,Dawei Yang,Honghua Yu,Jianteng Xie,Yunkao Zeng,Yunkao Zeng,Jun Wang,Liang Zhang +8 more
TL;DR: Whether neural or vascular defects occur first in the early onset of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is undetermined.
