TL;DR: In this paper, an improved method for anode sample fabrication, its validation and preliminary results for mechanical properties are presented, and an experimental procedure is devised to obtain the required data and to calibrate its parameters.
Abstract: In the industrial aluminum production, anode baking is one of the most cost-intensive manufacturing processes. Different parameters including thermo-mechanical solicitations and internal built-up pore pressure resulting from generated volatiles will have an impact on final anode properties. Hence, evolution of mechanical properties occupies an important position in design of anode block and its baking. In order to capture the evolution of those properties, a reliable experimental procedure needs to be devised to obtain the required data and to calibrate its parameters. This paper presents an improved method for anode sample fabrication, its validation and preliminary results for mechanical properties.

TL;DR: In this paper, a process for manufacturing a carbonaceous anode for an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminium is described, which comprises at least a first fraction of coal tar pitch, a second fraction of coke particle, and a third fraction of boron-impregnated coke particles.
Abstract: There is provided a process for manufacturing a carbonaceous anode for an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminium. The process comprises contacting coke particles with a boron-containing solution to obtain boron-impregnated coke particles, mixing the boron- impregnated coke particles with coal tar pitch to form an anode paste, and forming a green anode with the anode paste. A carbonaceous anode for an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminium is also provided, which comprises at least a first fraction of coke particle, a second fraction of coke particles and coal tar pitch, wherein at least the first faction of coke particles comprises boron-impregnated coke particles, the boron- impregnated coke particles being distributed throughout the carbonaceous anode. The carbonaceous anode presents good resistivity towards air and CO 2 oxidation, which translates into less dusting of the anode, thus improving its integrity throughout its lifetime.
