Evidence for the Role of Isometric Exercise Training in Reducing Blood Pressure: Potential Mechanisms and Future Directions
Philip J. Millar,Cheri L. McGowan,Véronique Cornelissen,Claudio Gil Soares de Araújo,Ian L. Swaine +4 more
TL;DR: Mounting prospective evidence suggests that isometric exercise training in normotensive and hypertensive cohorts of young and old participants may produce similar, if not greater, reductions in BP, with meta-analyses reporting mean reductions of between 10 and 13 mmHg systolic, and 6 and 8 mm hstolic.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effects of caffeine ingestion on performance time, speed and power during a laboratory-based 1 km cycling time-trial
TL;DR: The results provide support for previous research that found improved performance after caffeine ingestion during short-duration high-intensity exercise.
Journal ArticleDOI
Validity of a Pictorial Perceived Exertion Scale for Effort Estimation and Effort Production During Stepping Exercise in Adolescent Children
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the validity of child-specific rating scales for effort perception in the study of paediatric effort perception, and found that the importance of child specific rating scales was not overlooked.
Journal ArticleDOI
Responses of bone turnover markers to repeated endurance running in humans under conditions of energy balance or energy restriction
Cathy L. Zanker,Ian L. Swaine +1 more
TL;DR: The results suggested that in trained distance runners, repeated periods of prolonged running do not affect the balance of bone turnover unless energy balance is simultaneously altered, and support the link between a negative energy balance, a reduced synthesis or serum level of IGF-1 and reduced collagen synthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relation between bone turnover, oestradiol, and energy balance in women distance runners.
Cathy L. Zanker,Ian L. Swaine +1 more
TL;DR: Positive correlations between serum levels of bone formation markers, BMI and serum oestradiol concentration in amenorrhoeic runners suggested that their reduced bone formation was linked to a low BMI and an oestrogen deficiency.
