Abstract: Photochromic-doped sol-gel materials have been prepared by adding a spiropyran photochromic dye to a solution of ethoxy silane monomers containing non-reacting ethyl radicals. After polymerization, normal photochromism (i.e., colored material upon UV irradiation) is obtained in the resulting matrix. The sol-gel matrix hinders the organic molecule rotations, thus giving two stable states, which can be reversibly switched by UV and green-blue irradiation respectively. If these materials are attached to optical fibers, the properties of the light throughput may be modified. Simple fiber-optic/photochromic devices made of two optical fibers placed in a V-groove removable connector have been prepared. Once cured, these devices behave as optically addressed variable delay generators. The same devices can be used for preparing simple optical switches and routing systems.

Abstract: The dynamic response, modeling and performance of a new optical intensity induced shutter have been studied. Hybrid optical waveguides made of optical fibers and photochromic doped gel-glass have been prepared by sol-gel process. A novel theoretical model explaining their behavior is shown, Experimental validation of the model is also shown. Design parameters of the devices, optical tunability and their application as extrinsic fiber optic intensity induced shutter (EFIS) are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated.

TL;DR: The optical memory effects of the newly developed sol-gel gel-glass based thermochromic material are studied in this paper, where several fundamental material parameters which contribute to the formation of two stable states in this substance are quantitatively measured.
Abstract: The optical memory effects of the newly developed sol-gel gel-glass based thermochromic material are studied. Several fundamental material parameters, which contribute to the formation of two stable states in this substance are quantitatively measured. Simple writing and erasing methods along with the long term stability of each memory state are demonstrated.
