Amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 core–shell magnetic nanomaterial as a novel adsorbent for aqueous heavy metals removal

A review with ca. 400 references is provided dealing with the use of mesoporous silica and organically-modified silica-based materials for removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from aqueous solutions. After having briefly discussed the interest of functionalized mesoporous silica for environmental remediation purposes, the various synthetic methods to prepare such nanoengineered adsorbents are described. Then, their application to the removal of heavy metal species, toxic anions, radionuclides, and a wide range of organic pollutants is presented in a comprehensive way with the help of extensive tables and some illustrating figures.

Over the past decades, organic-inorganic hybrid polymers have been applied in different fields, including the adsorption of pollutants from wastewater and solid-state separations. In this review, firstly, these compounds are classified. These compounds are prepared by sol-gel method, self-assembly process (mesopores), assembling of nanobuilding blocks (e.g., layered or core-shell compounds) and as interpenetrating networks and hierarchically structures. Lastly, the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals of these materials, including different kinds of functional groups, selectivity of them for heavy metals, effect of pH and synthesis conditions on adsorption capacity, are studied.

Modified SBA-15 mesoporous silica for heavy metal ions remediation.

A new method was proposed for the preconcentration of copper ions using a column packed with SBA-15 mesoporous silica functionalized with N-Propylsalicylaldimine. The effects of various parameters such as pH, flow rate of sample, elution conditions, sample volume and enrichment factor, and the influence of some matrix elements have been studied. The dynamic adsorption capacity for Cu2+ under optimized conditions was 985.6 μg.g-1. The adsorbed metal ions were quantitatively eluted by 2 mL of 1M HCl (enrichment factor of 200).Common coexisting ions did not interfere with the separation. Copper was determined from spiked tap water and mineral water by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) after preconcentration on this new solid-phase extraction (SPE) material. The obtained recoveries were 103 ± 3% and 97 ± 2%, respectively. The LOD and LOQ values of the proposed method were found to be 6.0 x 10-6 and 1x 10-5 mM. For three preconcentration experiments the relative standard deviation was found to be ≤ 5% in all cases proving high accuracy and precision of the presented method.
