The development of new technologies is key to the continued improvement of medicine, relying on comprehensive materials design strategies that can integrate advanced therapeutic and diagnostic functions with a variety of surface properties such as selective adhesion, dynamic responsiveness, and optical/mechanical tunability Liquid-infused surfaces have recently come to the forefront as a unique approach to surface coatings that can resist adhesion of a wide range of contaminants on medical devices Furthermore, these surfaces are proving highly versatile in enabling the integration of established medical surface treatments alongside the antifouling capabilities, such as drug release or biomolecule organization Here, the range of research being conducted on liquid-infused surfaces for medical applications is presented, from an understanding of the basics behind the interactions of physiological fluids, microbes, and mammalian cells with liquid layers to current applications of these materials in point-of-care diagnostics, medical tubing, instruments, implants, and tissue engineering Throughout this exploration, the design parameters of liquid-infused surfaces and how they can be adapted and tuned to particular applications are discussed, while identifying how the range of controllable factors offered by liquid-infused surfaces can be used to enable completely new and dynamic approaches to materials and devices for human health

Designing Liquid‐Infused Surfaces for Medical Applications: A Review

In this work, two natural sources, including pomegranate peel extract and cochineal dye were employed for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The natural silver complex from pomegranate peel extract resulted in nano-sized structures through solution-phase method, but this method was not efficient for cochineal dye-silver precursor and the as-formed products were highly agglomerated. Therefore, an alternative facile solid-state approach was investigated as for both natural precursors and the results showed successful production of well-dispersed nanoparticles with narrow size distribution for cochineal dye-silver precursor. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

Biosynthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles prepared from two novel natural precursors by facile thermal decomposition methods.

The environmental processes of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been widely investigated in the literature where the importance of natural organic matter (NOM) was often highlighted. This review thoroughly summarized the emerging efforts in understanding interactions between MNPs and NOM. The main environmental processes influenced by NOM are adsorption, stabilization/aggregation, dissolution and surface transformation. Adsorption, competition and desorption irreversibility of NOM on the MNP surface were discussed with regard to NOM properties. For soluble MNPs, their dissolution was generally promoted after interacting with NOM although dissolution suppression was also reported. Besides dissolution, two main surface transformation processes including oxidation and sulfidation can occur on the MNP surface in the presence of NOM. The relationship between NOM-induced dispersion and other processes such as adsorption, dissolution and surface transformation was discussed. Due to the alteration of the above environmental processes, NOM can have an impact on the toxicity of MNPs on aquatic organisms. Therefore, the toxicity of MNPs in the presence of different types of NOM was addressed. It is concluded that NOM can alter MNP toxicity through changing suspension stabilization of MNPs, bioavailability of metal ions dissolved from MNPs, electrostatic interactions and steric repulsion between MNPs and organisms, and MNP-induced reactive oxygen species generation. However, the impact of MNP transformation induced by NOM on toxicity needs further investigations. Moreover, mesocosm studies and mathematical models are suggested to examine the environmental processes of MNPs in the presence of NOM in large-scale aquatic systems. Several key research challenges are provided at the end of this review.

Environmental processes and toxicity of metallic nanoparticles in aquatic systems as affected by natural organic matter

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit a consistent amount of flexible properties which endorse them for a larger spectrum of applications in biomedicine and related fields. Over the years, silver nanoparticles have been subjected to numerous in vitro and in vivo tests to provide information about their toxic behavior towards living tissues and organisms. Researchers showed that AgNPs have high antimicrobial efficacy against many bacteria species including Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis and also viruses. Due to their novel properties, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles into different materials like textile fibers and wound dressings can extend their utility on the biomedical field while inhibiting infections and biofilm development. Among the noble metal nanoparticles, AgNPs present a series of features like simple synthesis routes, adequate and tunable morphology, and high surface to volume ratio, intracellular delivery system, a large plasmon field area recommending them as ideal biosensors, catalysts or photo-controlled delivery systems. In bioengineering, silver nanoparticles are considered potentially ideal gene delivery systems for tissue regeneration. The remote triggered detection and release of bioactive compounds of silver nanoparticles has proved their relevance also in forensic sciences. The authors report an up to date review related to the toxicity of AgNPs and their applications in antimicrobial activity and biosensors for gene therapy.

Applications and toxicity of silver nanoparticles: a recent review.

Silver nanoparticles have attracted significant attention from researchers because of their large number of applications, such as medical imaging, filters, drug delivery, nanocomposites, cell electrodes, and antimicrobial products. Plenty of studies revealed advantageous size- and shape-depending properties, which can be used in order to achieve complex systems for various purposes. Silver nanoparticles can be obtained by many methods but the most used technique is green synthesis. In this method, silver nanoparticles can be easily synthesized by manipulating different microorganisms or plants including: green tea (Camellia sinensis), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), and Brassica juncea. The elimination of toxic and expensive chemical substances is the most substantial benefit. Due to their novel properties, silver nanoparticles are considered potentially ideal for cancer therapy. In recent years, numerous studies have claimed that silver nanoparticles can be successfully used as antitumor agents due to their antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing properties. Both in vivo and in vitro tests have been performed on various types of cancer cells in order to correlate the physical properties of nanosilver and the administered doses with a satisfactory effect on tumor and the healthy tissues surrounding it. However, for silver nanoparticles to become influential in nanomedicine and for patient safety, all the mechanisms related to their anticancer activity must be understood.
