Medicinal plants gained momentous support in the recent era for their therapeutic potential. The core objective of the research study was to characterize the indigenous variety of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), locally known as “Kalonji” and its fixed and essential oils. Compositional analysis revealed that it contains appreciable quantities of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Moreover, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium were predominant minerals, whilst considerable quantities of sodium, iron, manganese, zinc and copper were also present. Characterization of fixed oil enumerated that polyunsaturated fatty acids were the dominating fraction i.e., 60.17±1.53% as compared to saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids i.e., 16.64±0.91 and 22.47±0.59%, respectively. Carotenoids and tocopherols were 450.66±16.21 mg/kg-oil, whereas thymoquinone contents were observed to be 201.31±13.17 mg/kg of seeds. In comparison, analysis of essential oil revealed that it contains functional ingredients like thymoquinone, dihydrothymoquinone, p-cymene, carvacrol, α-thujene, thymol, α-pinene, β-pinene and t-anethole as major constituents. Furthermore, In vitro antioxidant capacity indicated that fixed and essential oils inhibited lipid peroxidation by 25.62 and 92.56% and 2, 2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity by 32.32 and 80.25%, respectively. The present findings showed that black cumin fixed and essential oils are rich source of phytochemicals and can be utilized against lifestyle disorders like hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia.

Remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils by using Solanum nigrum: a review.

Ficus species have wide distribution and uses worldwide traditionally as medicine, vegetable, food, fodder and fuel wood etc. The flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer was employed for the estimation, conducted on four plant parts (leaves, bark, aerial roots and fruits) of 12 samples of eight medicinally important species of Ficus and nine samples of wild edible fruits of genus Ficus, collected from different locations within Pakistan. The results of the present study provide justification for the usage of these fruits in daily diet for nutrition as well as for medicinal usage and medicinal plants in the treatment of different diseases. The metal contents in the samples were found at different levels which play a vital role in cure of diseases. Toxic elements Cd and Pb were also found but at very low concentration. These results can give the importance about the wild edible fruits and used to set new standards for prescribing the dosage of the herbal drugs prepared from these plant materials in herbal remedies and in pharmaceutical companies.

Globalization interferes with infectious disease control at the national level while microbes move freely around the world, unhindered by borders, human responses to infectious diseases and are conditioned by jurisdictional boundaries (Stepanovic et al., 2003). According to WHO, important progress has been made in controlling major infectious diseases. About 43% of total deaths occurred in developing countries due to infectious diseases in recent years (Carballo et al., 2002). Similarly, freedom from insect infestation and contamination has become an important consideration in storage of grain and to maintain high quality food product by preventing them from attack of the most frequently invading organisms (Coolins, 1998). Nearly one thousand species of insects have been associated with store products throughout the world, of which the majority belong to Coleoptera (60%) and Lepidoptera (8 - 9%) (Champ, 1981). Proximate composition of proteins, crude fibers, fats & oils, moistures, ash contents and carbohydrates and different elements like C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, P, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Fe and Br in some medicinal plants viz., Rumex hastatus, Rumex dentatus, Rumex nepalensis, Rheum australe, Persicaria maculosa and Polygonum plebejum of the family Polygonaceae is presented.

Nutritional and elemental analyses of some selected medicinal plants of the family Polygonaceae

The cytotoxicity of the crude methanolic extracts of Rumex hastatus, Rumex dentatus, Rumex nepalensis, Rheum australe, Polygonum persicaria and Polygonum plebejum (Family Polygonaceae) was determined against Artemia salina at 1000, 100 and 10 mg/ml. R. hastatus, R. dentatus and R. nepalensis showed significant activity at a concentration of 1000 mg/ml against Artemia salina. R. australe showed low activity at 1000 mg/ml and no activity at 100 and 10 mg/ml. At concentration of 10 mg/ml, R. australe showed no activity. Similarly the phytotoxicity of the crude extracts of these six plants was determined against Lemna minor. All the plants except R. hastatus showed significant activity at a concentration of 1000 mg/ml. Moderate activity was shown by R. australe, R. nepalensis and P. persicaria at the concentration of 100 mg/ml. All the plants showed low phytotoxic activity at concentration of 10 mg/ml.

Cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity of some selected medicinal plants of the family Polygonaceae

The proximate analysis revealed the presence of ash, moisture, protein, fiber, fats and carbohydrate. ANOVA showed that ash and moisture contents was non significant between the plant parts and phenological stages. Crude protein was non significant between the plant parts and phenological stages except for Datura innoxia parts but not for its phenolgical stages, while crude fats were non significant between the plant parts and phenological stages except for Solanum nigrum and Solanum surattense parts but not for their phenolgical stages. Crude fiber was non significant between the plant parts and phenological stages except for Datura innoxia parts but not for its phenolgical stages. And carbohydrates was non significant between the plant parts and phenological stages except for the phenolgical stages of Solanum surattense and Withania coagulans. The mineral analysis showed the presence of Cr, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ca, K, Mg and Na in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits of the plants in three different phenological stages. Only the micro-minerals were present in traces while the macro-minerals were present high quantities as compared to the micro-minerals.
