TL;DR: Short-course oral zidovudine was safe, well tolerated, and decreased mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 at age 3 months, and substantial efforts will be needed to ensure successful widespread implementation of such a regimen.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that clade A is the predominant HIV-1 subtype in HIV-seropositive individuals in Abidjan, Ivory Coast and that these strains are phylogenetically distinct from other subtype A strains observed in East Africa.
