Journal ArticleDOI
The seven countries study: 2,289 deaths in 15 years.
Ancel Keys,Alessandro Menotti,Christ Aravanis,Henry Blackburn,Bozidar S. Djordevič,Ratko Buzina,Anastasios Dontas,Flaminio Fidanza,Karvonen Mj,Noboru Kimura,Ivan Mohacek,Srecko Nedeljkovic,Vittorio Puddu,Sven Punsar,Henry Longstreet Taylor,Susanna Conti,Daan Kromhout,Hironori Toshima +17 more
TL;DR: Expectations for coronary death from the experience in the United States and northern Europe greatly exceeded observed deaths in southern Europe for men of their age, serum cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking habits, physical activity, and relative weight.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of multivariate predictive power of major risk factors for coronary heart diseases in different countries: results from eight nations of the Seven Countries Study, 25-year follow-up
Alessandro Menotti,Ancel Keys,Henry Blackburn,Daan Kromhout,Martti J. Karvonen,Aulikki Nissinen,Juha Pekkanen,Sven Punsar,Flaminio Fidanza,Simona Giampaoli,Fulvia Seccareccia,Ratko Buzina,Ivan Mohacek,Srecko Nedeljkovic,C. Aravanis,Anastasios Dontas,Hironori Toshima,Mariapaola Lanti +17 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that among eight national groups of men aged 40-59 years enrolled in the Seven Countries Study, the multivariate coefficients of major risk factors predicting coronary heart disease mortality over 25 years would be relatively similar.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inter-cohort differences in coronary heart disease mortality in the 25-year follow-up of the seven countries study.
Alessandro Menotti,A. Keys,Daan Kromhout,Henry Blackburn,C. Aravanis,Bennie P. M. Bloemberg,Ratko Buzina,Anastasios Dontas,Flaminio Fidanza,Simona Giampaoli,Martti J. Karvonen,Mariapaola Lanti,Ivan Mohacek,Srecko Nedeljkovic,A. Nissinen,Juha Pekkanen,S. Punsar,Fulvia Seccareccia,Hironori Toshima +18 more
TL;DR: It can be concluded that this study suggests that mean serum cholesterol is the major risk factor in explaining cross-cultural differences in CHD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Twenty-five-year prediction of stroke deaths in the seven countries study: the role of blood pressure and its changes.
Alessandro Menotti,David R. Jacobs,Henry Blackburn,Daan Kromhout,Aulikki Nissinen,Srecko Nedeljkovic,Ratko Buzina,Ivan Mohacek,Fulvia Seccareccia,Simona Giampaoli,Anastasios Dontas,Christ Aravanis,Hironori Toshima +12 more
TL;DR: This study finds lower stroke risk in those men whose blood pressure increased moderately from low usual levels, and associations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure with stroke mortality were similar in cultures with different stroke mortality rates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in population cholesterol levels and coronary heart disease deaths in seven countries
Alessandro Menotti,Henry Blackburn,Daan Kromhout,A. Nissinen,Flaminio Fidanza,Simona Giampaoli,Ratko Buzina,Ivan Mohacek,Srdjan S. Nedeljkovic,C. Aravanis,Hironori Toshima +10 more
TL;DR: In the Seven Countries Study, late coronary heart disease death rates are largely "explained' by changes in blood cholesterol levels during the early phases of the study, mainly due to increases in lower cholesterol levels among some cohorts.
