Experiments are described in which shell-side heat transfer coefficients for a shell-and-tube heat exchanger were determined from mass transfer measurements. The mass transfer experiments were carried out using the naphthalene sublimation technique. In utilizing the technique, the external surface of the tubes is coated with a film of naphthalene, which sublimes when exposed to an air flow. Mass transfer coefficients were measured for fully developed flow conditions at each of the tubes in the cross section. These coefficients were transformed to heat transfer coefficients by employing the analogy between heat and mass transfer. Detailed pressure drop measurements were made internal to the heat exchanger, and the axial pressure distribution indicated that the fluid flow was fully developed downstream of the first compartment. Internal, Shellside Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

The oil-lampblack technique was employed to reveal the patterns of fluid flow in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Flow patterns were visualized adjacent to the shell wall, to the baffle plates, and to each tube of the array. From the flow patterns adjacent to the shell, three recirculation zones were identified. The patterns adjacent to the baffles were similar to those for cross flow over a tube bank, with curvature-related deviations near the shell. The flow patterns adjacent to the tubes showed, typically, a stagnation line/circumferential flow system on the upstream face of each tube and a recirculation tone dominating the tee side. Turn-related deviations from these patterns were in evidence at the window region.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), essential molecules whose precursors must be dietary supplied, are highly represented in the brain contributing to numerous neuronal processes. Recent findings have demonstrated that LCPUFA are represented in lipid raft microstructures, where they favor molecular interactions of signaling complexes underlying neuronal functionality. During aging, the brain lipid composition changes affecting the lipid rafts’ integrity and protein signaling, which may induce memory detriment. We investigated the effect of a n-3 LCPUFA-enriched diet on the cognitive function of 6- and 15-months-old female mice. Likewise, we explored the impact of dietary n-3 LCPUFAs on hippocampal lipid rafts, and their potential correlation with aging-induced neuroinflammation. Our results demonstrate that n-3 LCPUFA supplementation improves spatial and recognition memory and restores the expression of glutamate and estrogen receptors in the hippocampal lipid rafts of aged mice to similar profiles than young ones. Additionally, the n-3 LCPUFA-enriched diet stabilized the lipid composition of the old mice’s hippocampal lipid rafts to the levels of young ones and reduced the aged-induced neuroinflammatory markers. Hence, we propose that n-3 LCPUFA supplementation leads to beneficial cognitive performance by “rejuvenating” the lipid raft microenvironment that stabilizes the integrity and interactions of memory protein players embedded in these microdomains.
