Bulk Metallic Glasses

The progress of solid-state phase transformations can generally be subdivided into three overlapping mechanisms: nucleation, growth and impingement. These can be modelled separately if hard impingement prevails. On that basis, an overview has been given of recent numerical and analytical methods for determination of the kinetic parameters of a transformation. The treatment focuses on both isothermally and isochronally conducted transformations. To extend the range of transformations that can be described analytically, a number of more or less empirical submodels, which are compatible with experimental results, has been included in the discussion. It has been shown that powerful, flexible, analytical models are possible, once the concept of time or temperature dependent growth exponent and effective activation energy, in agreement with the existing experimental observations, has been adopted. An explicit (numerical) procedure to deduce the operating kinetic processes from experimental transformation-rate data, on the basis of different nucleation, growth and hard impingement mechanisms, has been demonstrated. Without recourse to any specific kinetic model, simple recipes have been given for the determination of the growth exponent and the effective activation energy from the experimental transformation-rate data.

Analysis of solid state phase transformation kinetics: models and recipes

Exothermic reactions can self-propagate rapidly in multilayered foils, and the properties of these reactions depend strongly on the heat of reaction, the average atomic diffusion distance, and the degree of intermixing at the layer interfaces prior to ignition. By performing low-temperature anneals on sputter-deposited Al/Ni nanolaminate foils, the thickness of the intermixed region between layers was increased and its effects on the heats and velocities of reactions were measured. The intermixed region consisted of the metastable Al9Ni2 phase while the final phase of the foil was Al3Ni2. Analytical and empirical models were used to predict reaction velocities as a function of bilayer thickness and intermixing thickness, and the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results. Increasing the average thickness of the intermixed region from 2.4 to 18.3 nm reduced the reaction velocity for all of the foils but was most significant for the foils with bilayer thicknesses less than 25 nm. The phase evolution during annealing of Al/Ni multilayer samples prepared by ion‐beam sputtering with composition modulation wavelengths Λ between 10 and 400 nm was determined using x‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter measurements. Samples with average compositions of Al0.40Ni0.60 and Al0.75Ni0.25 were investigated. For the Al0.40Ni0.60 samples the following results were obtained. A measure of the degree of periodicity and the sharpness of the interfaces in a sample with Λ=80 nm was the large number (over 20) of peaks observed in small‐angle x‐ray scattering measurements. A sample with Λ=10 nm was transformed by heat treatment directly to the AlNi phase. In the Λ=80 nm sample, the first phase formed after annealing was the metastable η phase. The η phase was identified as Al9Ni2. In the 400 nm wavelength sample, both the metastable η phase and the stable Al3Ni formed after the first exothermic reaction.
