Elasticity of Minerals, Glasses, and Melts

A new empirical pairwise potential model for ionic and semi-ionic oxides has been developed. Its transferability and reliability have been demonstrated by testing the potentials toward the prediction of structural and mechanical properties of a wide range of silicates of technological and geological importance. The partial ionic charge model with a Morse function is used, and it allows the modeling of the quenching of melts, silicate glasses, and inorganic crystals at high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The results obtained by molecular dynamics and free energy calculations are discussed in relation to the prediction of structural and mechanical properties of a series of soda lime silicate glasses.

The Velocity of Compressional Waves in Rocks to 10 Kilobars, Part 2

The single crystal elastic constants of nonmetamict zircons have been measured as a function of pressure to 12 kb at room temperature and also as a function of temperature between 25 and 300° C at atmospheric pressure. The pressure derivatives of the elastic constants are: C
11=10.78, C
33=5.88, C
44=0.99, C
66=−0.31, C
12=3.24, C
13=6.20. The anomalous negative behaviour of C
66 versus pressure could be associated with a high pressure phase transition. The pressure and temperature derivatives of the isotropic elastic wave velocities and elastic moduli for nonmetamict zircon are calculated from the present single crystal data by the Voigt, Ruess, and Hill approximations and compared with the values of some other oxides and silicates. The pressure derivative of the isotropic adiabatic bulk modulus is relatively high (dK
S/dP=6.50), and the pressure derivative of the shear modulus is relatively low, (dG/dP=0.78), compared to the corresponding values for some other oxides and silicates. The Debye temperature, ϑD, and the high temperature limit of the Gruneisen parameter, γHt, calculated from the elastic constants and their pressure derivatives, agrees well with the Debye temperature and the thermal Gruneisen parameter, γth, calculated from the thermal expansion, heat capacity, and compressibility data.

Pressure dependence of the elastic constants of nonmetamict zircon

Two independent reports in the literature for the elastic constants of zircon (zirconium silicate) are in disagreement by an order of magnitude and are reported without specifying the conditions of the mineralogical specimens. However, natural zircon crystals frequently contain uranium and thorium atoms as an impurity so that zircon can exist in a metamict (radiation damaged) condition. A redetermination of the elastic constants has been carried out on small synthetic crystals and on high‐purity natural single crystals of nonmetamict zircon of lattice parameters ao = 6.606(2) A, co = 5.980(2) A by ultrasonic pulse superposition and also by phase comparison methods. The values in 1012 dyn/cm2 are c11 = 4.237, c33 = 4.900, c44 = 1.136, c66 = 0.485, c12 = 0.703, and c13 = 1.495. The estimated uncertainty in the measurements are 0.4% for c11, c33, c44, and c66, and 3% for c12 and c13.
