Summary form only given. Fundamental processes in atoms, molecules, as well as condensed matter are triggered or mediated by the motion of electrons inside or between atoms. Electronic dynamics on atomic length scales tends to unfold within tens to thousands of attoseconds (1 attosecond [as] = 10-18 s). Recent breakthroughs in laser science are now opening the door to watching and controlling these hitherto inaccessible microscopic dynamics. The key to accessing the attosecond time domain is the control of the electric field of (visible) light, which varies its strength and direction within less than a femtosecond (1 femtosecond = 1000 attoseconds). Atoms exposed to a few oscillations cycles of intense laser light are able to emit a single extreme ultraviolet (XUV) burst lasting less than one femtosecond. Full control of the evolution of the electromagnetic field in laser pulses comprising a few wave cycles have recently allowed the reproducible generation and measurement of isolated sub-femtosecond XUV pulses, demonstrating the control of microscopic processes (electron motion and photon emission) on an attosecond time scale. These tools have enabled us to visualize the oscillating electric field of visible light with an attosecond "oscilloscope", to control single-electron and probe multi-electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids. Recent experiments hold promise for the development of an attosecond X-ray source, which may pave the way towards 4D electron imaging with sub-atomic resolution in space and time.

Attosecond Physics

Laser excitation of nanometer-sized atomic and molecular clusters offers various opportunities to explore and control ultrafast many-particle dynamics. Whereas weak laser fields allow the analysis of photoionization, excited-state relaxation, and structural modifications on these finite quantum systems, large-amplitude collective electron motion and Coulomb explosion can be induced with intense laser pulses. This review provides an overview of key phenomena arising from laser-cluster interactions with focus on nonlinear optical excitations and discusses the underlying processes according to the current understanding. A general survey covers basic cluster properties and excitation mechanisms relevant for laser-driven cluster dynamics. Then, after an excursion in theoretical and experimental methods, results for single-photon and multiphoton excitations are reviewed with emphasis on signatures from time- and angular-resolved photoemission. A key issue of this review is the broad spectrum of phenomena arising from clusters exposed to strong fields, where the interaction with the laser pulse creates short-lived and dense nanoplasmas. The implications for technical developments such as the controlled generation of ion, electron, and radiation pulses will be addressed along with corresponding examples. Finally, future prospects of laser-cluster research as well as experimental and theoretical challenges are discussed.

Laser-driven nonlinear cluster dynamics

This review covers the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method, which is a powerful and general algorithm for solving the timedependent Schr¨ odinger equation. The formal derivation is discussed as well as applications of the method. Recent extensions of MCTDH are treated in brief, namely, MCTDHB and MCTDHF, for treating identical particles (bosons and fermions), and the very powerful multilayer (ML-MCTDH) formalism. Compact representations of potential energy surfaces (PESs) are also discussed, as the representation of a PES becomes a major bottleneck when going to larger systems (nine or more dimensions) while employing a full-dimensional, complicated, and nonseparable PES. As applications of MCTDH, we discuss the calculation of photoionization and photoexcitation spectra of the vibronically coupled systems butatriene and pyrazine, respectively, and the infra-red spectrum of the Zundel cation (protonated water dimer) H5O + . Studying molecular quantum dynamics with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method

A new theory is proposed to accurately simulate quantum dynamics in systems of identical particles. It is based on the second quantization formalism of many-body quantum theory, in which the Fock space is represented by occupation-number states. Within this representation the overall Fock space can be formally decomposed into smaller subspaces, and the wave function can be expressed as a multilayer multiconfiguration Hartree expansion involving subvectors in these subspaces. The theory unifies the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree theory for both distinguishable and indistinguishable particles. Specific formulations are given for systems of identical fermions, bosons, and combinations thereof. Practical implementations are discussed, especially for the case of fermions, to include the operator algebra that enforces the symmetry of identical particles. The theory is illustrated by a numerical example on vibrationally coupled electron transport.

Numerically exact quantum dynamics for indistinguishable particles: the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree theory in second quantization representation.

Multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) theory is a rigorous and powerful method to simulate quantum dynamics in complex many-body systems. This approach extends the original MCTDH theory of Meyer, Manthe, and Cederbaum to include dynamically contracted layers in a recursive way, within which the equations of motion are determined from the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle. This paper presents the general derivation of the theory and analyzes the important features that make the ML-MCTDH method numerically efficient. Furthermore, we discuss the generalization of the theory to treat many-body identical particles (fermions or bosons) as well as calculating energy eigenstates via the improved relaxation method.

Multilayer Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree Theory

The multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach for the description of correlated few-electron dynamics in the presence of strong laser fields is introduced and a comprehensive description of the method is given. Total ionization and electron spectra for the ground and first excited ionic channels are calculated for one-dimensional model systems with up to six active electrons. Strong correlation effects are found in the shape of photoelectron peaks and the dependence of ionization on molecule size.
