Engineering Systems of Systems is one of the new chal-lenges of the last few years. This depends on the increasing number of systems that must interact one with another to achieve a goal. One peculiarity of Systems of Systems is that they are made of systems able to live on their own with well-established functionalities and requirements, and that are not necessarily aware of the joint mission or prepared to collaborate. In this emergent scenario, securi-ty is one crucial aspect that must be considered from the very beginning. In fact, the security of a System of Sys-tems is not automatically granted even if the security of each constituent system is guaranteed. The aim of this paper is to address the problem of assessing security properties in Systems of Systems. We discuss the specific security aspects of such emergent systems, and propose the TeSSoS approach, which includes modelling and testing security properties in Systems of Systems and introduces the Red and Blue Requirements Specification concepts.

Security assessment of systems of systems

Within growing pervasive information systems, Systems of Systems (SoS) emerge as a new research frontier. A SoS is formed by a set of constituent systems that live on their own with well-established functionalities and requirements, and, in certain circumstances, they must collaborate to achieve a common mission. In this scenario, security is one crucial property that needs to be considered since the early stages of SoS lifecycle. Unfortunately, SoS security cannot be guaranteed by addressing the security of each constituent system separately. The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenges faced in addressing the security of SoS and to propose some research ideas centered around the notion of a mission to be carried out by the SoS.

Addressing Security Properties in Systems of Systems: Challenges and Ideas

The Department of Defense is in the initial stages of developing its next-generation communications infrastructure, with the aim of capitalizing on the high-bandwidth commercial infrastructure currently being put in place worldwide. The military system, like the commercial system, will eventually provide Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) services using asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching technology. ATM was originally developed for the very-high-bandwidth, very-low-noise environment provided by fiber optics. Since the tactical arena, with its radio-based transmission facilities, can provide nothing that even approximates this environment, there is a significant mismatch. This paper outlines a design concept which integrates the design of the network with the design of its transmission and switching components, coupling protocol design trade-offs at the physical, data-link, and network layers with trade-offs in radio and antenna design (within the constraints of transmission-path characteristics). Designing a tactical ATM network integrating performance engineering and design

The Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) provides architectural artifact examples for modeling complex system of systems within the information-centric and hardware-centric global battlespace theater. This framework is utilized by all U.S. government agencies and military branches that procure military hardware and plan for tomorrow's strategic evolution in the armed forces. This framework must be adopted by those business organizations who wish to market their products to the U.S. military. The models mandated by the DoDAF do not always align with the software development methods and production processes utilized in the commercial enterprises who position their products for acquisition into the network centric military markets. This is especially true for software industries where object oriented analysis and design methods have become entrenched as an industry standard. This paper analyzes object oriented development of complex systems and compares the artifacts produced through this method with artifacts produced through the structured architecture techniques described by the DoDAF. The comparison provides an evaluation of the commonality and gaps between both ideologies.

Development of systems of systems outstrips the current software systems development strategy. A development strategy which integrates design, analysis, modeling and simulation using a methodology which integrates aspects of modular decomposition, object-oriented design, and distributed system design is reported.
