Transparent conductors—A status review

Thin films of silicon-doped Fe2O3 were deposited by APCVD (atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition) from Fe(CO)5 and TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) on SnO2-coated glass at 415 °C. HRSEM reveals a highly developed dendritic nanostructure of 500 nm thickness having a feature size of only 10−20 nm at the surface. Real surface area determination by dye adsorption yields a roughness factor of 21. XRD shows the films to be pure hematite with strong preferential orientation of the [110] axis vertical to the substrate, induced by silicon doping. Under illumination in 1 M NaOH, water is oxidized at the Fe2O3 electrode with higher efficiency (IPCE = 42% at 370 nm and 2.2 mA/cm2 in AM 1.5 G sunlight of 1000 W/m2 at 1.23 VRHE) than at the best reported single crystalline Fe2O3 electrodes. New Benchmark for Water Photooxidation by Nanostructured α-Fe2O3 Films

Black silicon (BSi) represents a very active research area in renewable energy materials. The rise of BSi as a focus of study for its fundamental properties and potentially lucrative practical applications is shown by several recent results ranging from solar cells and light-emitting devices to antibacterial coatings and gas-sensors. In this paper, the common BSi fabrication techniques are first reviewed, including electrochemical HF etching, stain etching, metal-assisted chemical etching, reactive ion etching, laser irradiation and the molten salt Fray-Farthing-Chen-Cambridge (FFC-Cambridge) process. The utilization of BSi as an anti-reflection coating in solar cells is then critically examined and appraised, based upon strategies towards higher efficiency renewable solar energy modules. Methods of incorporating BSi in advanced solar cell architectures and the production of ultra-thin and flexible BSi wafers are also surveyed. Particular attention is given to routes leading to passivated BSi surfaces, which are essential for improving the electrical properties of any devices incorporating BSi, with a special focus on atomic layer deposition of Al2O3. Finally, three potential research directions worth exploring for practical solar cell applications are highlighted, namely, encapsulation effects, the development of micro-nano dual-scale BSi, and the incorporation of BSi into thin solar cells. It is intended that this paper will serve as a useful introduction to this novel material and its properties, and provide a general overview of recent progress in research currently being undertaken for renewable energy applications.

Black silicon: fabrication methods, properties and solar energy applications

Grain boundary states play a dominant role in determining the electrical and photovoltaic properties of polycrystalline silicon by acting as traps and recombination centers. The recombination loss at grain boundaries is the predominant loss mechanism in polycrystalline solar cells. Cell parameters are calculated based on a transformation of grain boundary recombination centers to a uniform distribution of such states throughout the grain. Effective carrier lifetime is expressed in terms of grain size, allowing calculation of short‐circuit current, open‐circuit voltage, and fill factor. Excellent agreement is observed between theory and experiment for almost all device parameters. It is indicated that one could fabricate 10% efficiency polycrystalline solar cells from 20‐μm‐thick material if the grain size exceeds 500 μm.

Preparation and physical properties of transparent conducting oxide films

Recently 12% efficient indium tin oxide (ITO) on silicon solar cells have been reported. Experiments indicate the presence of a thin interfacial insulating layer. Thus, these devices appear to belong to a class of semiconductor‐insulator‐semiconductor (SIS) solar cells where one of the semiconductors is a degenerate wide‐band‐gap oxide. We have developed a theory in terms of minority‐carrier tunnel current transport through the interfacial layer where one semiconductor is in a nonequilibrium mode. The wide‐band‐gap semiconductor serves to block band‐to‐band majority‐carrier current and thus, in principle, give better device performance than with an MIS solar cell. The effects of interfacial layer thickness, substrate doping level, surface states and interface charge, temperature on the performance of SIS solar cells have been calculated.
