Genetic identification and implications of another invasive species of dreissenid mussel in the Great Lakes

TL;DR: A second nonindigenous species of dreissenid mussel in the Great Lakes was detected in a routine screening of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) for allozyme variability, and is called the "quagga mussel."
Journal ArticleDOI

Round Goby and Mottled Sculpin Predation on Lake Trout Eggs and Fry: Field Predictions from Laboratory Experiments

TL;DR: The similar predation of lake trout eggs by round gobies and mottled sculpin and high densities the goby has achieved at some Great Lakes sites leads to the prediction that the round goby may negatively affect lake trout reproduction and therefore rehabilitation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Predation by Alewives on Lake Trout Fry in Lake Ontario: Role of an Exotic Species in Preventing Restoration of a Native Species

TL;DR: Increased stocking of predatory salmonids to suppress the alewives could enhance survival of fry and speed restoration in Lake Ontario, but suppression seems unlikely under current strategies to manage the alewife as forage for non-native salmonids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Progress Toward Lake Trout Restoration in Lake Michigan

TL;DR: A detailed overview of lake trout restoration in Lake Michigan can be found in this article, where a 40% total mortality goal lakewide, creating two large refuges designed to encompass historically the most productive spawning habitat and protect trout stocked over their home range, evaluating several lake trout strains and setting stocking priorities throughout the lake.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of the Great Lakes quagga mussel as Dreissena bugensis from the Dnieper River, Ukraine, on the basis of allozyme variation

TL;DR: The North American quagga mussel is D. bugensis which has been introduced from the Black Sea drainage of Ukraine and is identified as Dreissena bugensis Andrusov on the basis of allozyme data and morphological characters.
