The Interaction of Water with Solid Surfaces: Fundamental Aspects Revisited

On the basis of different types of experiments, the authors develop implicitly the model of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of adsorbates on metal surfaces. The long-range enhancement by resonances of the macroscopic laser and Stokes field is separated quantitatively from the metal electron-mediated resonance Raman effect. The latter mechanism proceeds by increased electron-photon coupling at an atomically rough surface and by temporary charge transfer to orbitals of the adsorbates. This model can account for the chemical specificity and vibrational selectivity of SERS and (partly) for the SERS specificity of the various metals.

Steam Reforming and Graphite Formation on Ni Catalysts

Nanostructured oxides in chemistry: characterization and properties.

Hydrogen (H2) was produced by aqueous-phase reforming of biomass-derived oxygenated hydrocarbons at temperatures near 500 kelvin over a tin-promoted Raney-nickel catalyst. The performance of this non-precious metal catalyst compares favorably with that of platinum-based catalysts for production of hydrogen from ethylene glycol, glycerol, and sorbitol. The addition of tin to nickel decreases the rate of methane formation from C-O bond cleavage while maintaining the high rates of C-C bond cleavage required for hydrogen formation.

Orientational phase transition in the system pyridine/Ag(111): A near-edge x-ray-absorption fine-structure study.

Polarization-dependent surface extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (SEXAFS) measurements on the O(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)/Cu(110) system show that every second [001] Cu row on the surface is missing, thus excluding the buckled-row model for the reconstruction. A SEXAFS amplitude comparison clearly favors the missing-row over the sawtooth model. It also provides evidence for a strong anisotropy of both the surface mean free path and the surface Debye-Waller factor.

Surface-extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure studies on the Ni(111)-c(4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)-CO system show that CO adsorbs in threefold-coordinated hollow sites. This result is in conflict with the adsorption-site determination via molecular vibrational frequencies, which for this system led to an assignment of a bridge site.
